Seventeen players are facing the possibility of missing a potential semi-final appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after picking up yellow cards during the knockout stages, leaving them one booking away from suspension.

The disciplinary concerns emerged after the conclusion of the last-16 matches on Tuesday, with several major nations entering the quarter-finals knowing key players must avoid further cautions to remain available for the next round.

Among the players at risk are England stars Jude Bellingham, Nico O’Reilly, Declan Rice and Marc Guéhi, who will need to navigate the quarter-final stage carefully if they are to feature in a possible semi-final.

Morocco also have four players facing the same threat, with Issa Diop, Achraf Hakimi, Redouane Halhal and Bilal El Khannouss all carrying yellow cards into the next stage of the tournament.

France have two players on the list, with Michael Olise and Manu Koné also one booking away from suspension. Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Miro Muheim complete another group of players facing disciplinary pressure.

Other nations affected include Spain, Norway, Belgium and Argentina, with Ferran Torres, Antonio Nusa, Brandon Mechele and Gonzalo Montiel also at risk of missing a semi-final if they receive another yellow card.

The situation adds another layer of tension to the quarter-finals, where every challenge and defensive decision could have major consequences for teams chasing a place in the final stages of the tournament.

For managers, balancing intensity with discipline will be crucial as they attempt to avoid losing influential players at the most important point of the competition.

With several experienced players involved, avoiding unnecessary bookings will be a priority as the tournament moves closer to its conclusion.
