Mourinho finally explains his bitter clash with Chelsea doctor

José Mourinho has revisited his bitter 2015 confrontation with former Chelsea first-team doctor Eva Carneiro in London on Monday, 10 August 2026, offering a fresh explanation for the explosive touchline incident in his new Netflix documentary, more than 11 years after the controversy.

The episode, which became one of the most contentious moments of Mourinho’s second spell at Chelsea, resurfaced as the three-part documentary about the Portuguese manager examines some of the defining episodes of his career.

Current reporting says Mourinho remains unapologetic about the incident while insisting that Carneiro’s gender had no bearing on his reaction.

Mourinho said he regarded a female doctor and a male doctor in the same way and argued that strong verbal reactions were part of the intense culture surrounding professional football.

“To me, a female doctor is equivalent to a male doctor. Therefore, I express my feelings vocally when I am dissatisfied,” Mourinho said, according to reports of the documentary.

The original confrontation occurred during Chelsea’s opening Premier League match of the 2015/16 season against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were already down to 10 players after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off when Eden Hazard went down late in the match.

Carneiro and first-team physiotherapist Jon Fearn entered the pitch to attend to Hazard, temporarily leaving Chelsea with only nine players.

Mourinho was furious because the medical intervention meant Hazard had to leave the field while receiving treatment.

The manager subsequently criticised Carneiro and Fearn for what he considered an unnecessary decision.

Mourinho later described the pair as “impulsive and naive”, while Carneiro’s legal case alleged that Mourinho had also directed an offensive insult towards her in Portuguese.

The allegation became a central part of the dispute surrounding her departure from Chelsea.

Carneiro was subsequently removed from first-team duties and left Chelsea in September 2015 after spending six years at the club.

The fallout moved beyond football when Carneiro pursued legal action against Chelsea and Mourinho.

She alleged constructive dismissal by Chelsea and discrimination and victimisation by Mourinho.

The dispute was eventually settled at an employment tribunal in June 2016.

The terms of the settlement were confidential, while Chelsea issued an unreserved apology to Carneiro and acknowledged that she had acted professionally when she entered the pitch to treat Hazard.

Mourinho did not issue a similar apology at the time, instead thanking Carneiro for her service to the club.

The settlement brought the legal proceedings to an end without a court finding establishing the allegations against Mourinho.

The Football Association had also investigated the original incident and cleared Mourinho of using discriminatory language against Carneiro, according to contemporary reporting.

Mourinho’s latest comments therefore reopen a controversy that was never simply about one touchline argument.

The incident became a wider conversation about authority, medical independence, workplace treatment and the emotional pressures surrounding elite football.

His explanation in the documentary focuses on football culture and the intensity of matches, rather than accepting that his reaction was influenced by Carneiro being a woman.

The timing is also significant.

More than a decade after the confrontation, Mourinho is preparing for another chapter of his managerial career at Real Madrid, while the documentary offers an unusually personal look back at the moments that shaped his reputation as one of football’s most compelling and polarising figures.

The Carneiro episode remains particularly striking because it came at the beginning of a turbulent Chelsea campaign. Mourinho had guided Chelsea to the Premier League title the previous season, but the 2015/16 campaign quickly deteriorated and Mourinho was dismissed in December 2015.

For Carneiro, the dispute ultimately led away from Chelsea and into a legal battle that concluded with a confidential settlement.

For Mourinho, the episode became another chapter in a career defined by extraordinary success as well as fierce confrontations.

Eleven years on, the manager’s latest comments provide a fresh window into how he understood one of the most controversial moments of his Chelsea career.

The documentary may offer Mourinho’s perspective, but the history of the dispute remains more complex than any single account.

The tribunal settlement, Chelsea’s apology and the FA’s decision all form part of the record, while the latest explanation comes directly from Mourinho himself.
