Britain proposes air defence, counter-drone technology and intelligence support as Abuja and London seek to deepen military cooperation
The United Kingdom has proposed providing Nigeria with air defence systems, counter-unmanned aerial technology and enhanced military intelligence capabilities as London moves to deepen its strategic defence partnership with the Nigerian Army.

British Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Brigadier Tom Harper, outlined the proposed support on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at Army Headquarters in Abuja.
The discussions covered a broad range of capabilities intended to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to respond to increasingly complex security threats, particularly asymmetric warfare and operations in difficult terrain.
Harper said the UK was considering support for the establishment of a reference Forward Operating Base within a cantonment environment, alongside the expansion of tactical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities to brigade level.
The proposed package also includes potential transfers of protected mobility vehicles and specialised ammunition support, according to a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.
The proposed UK air defence support forms part of Britain’s continuing commitment under the Security and Defence Partnership with Nigeria, which seeks to strengthen both operational capabilities and institutional capacity.
Harper also outlined plans to expand regional train-the-trainer programmes covering combat tactical drills, casualty care and advanced patrolling.
Future Operation HADIN KAI training cohorts are expected to include troops from Niger, Cameroon and Chad alongside Nigerian personnel, an arrangement designed to improve interoperability among countries confronting related security threats in the Lake Chad Basin.
For the Nigerian Army, the proposed cooperation comes as its operational environment becomes increasingly demanding, with armed groups adapting their methods and exploiting difficult terrain and complex security conditions.
Shaibu said the deepening relationship with the UK was critical to building a more adaptable and resilient military capable of responding effectively to evolving threats.
“The partnership, he noted, remains central to strengthening operational effectiveness, force protection, intelligence capabilities, specialised training and institutional capacity,” the Army said.
The Chief of Army Staff identified asymmetric warfare and operations in dense and challenging terrain, particularly in the North-East, as major operational concerns.
He said the Army needed stronger Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities, technical intelligence, aviation support and continuous domain awareness extending down to battalion level.
Those requirements reflect the changing nature of military operations in the North-East, where conventional ground operations increasingly depend on timely intelligence, mobility, surveillance and the ability to identify threats before they materialise.
The proposed counter-unmanned aerial systems are particularly relevant to that evolving environment.
The technology is designed to help forces detect, track and counter hostile drones, which have become an increasingly important component of modern warfare and surveillance.
The UK discussions also come as the Nigerian Army expands its organisational structure.
Shaibu noted that the Army had grown from eight to 12 divisions and said the expansion would require corresponding investments in training, instructor development and specialised capabilities.
He specifically highlighted the need to strengthen Special Forces capabilities and expand capacity at the Doma training facility.
The Army leadership also stressed the importance of maintaining long-term engagement with trusted international partners as Nigeria works to modernise its forces.
The focus extends beyond equipment. The partnership is expected to support professional military education, technology integration, capability development and the adoption of contemporary approaches to countering asymmetric threats.
Shaibu also emphasised the importance of ensuring that operational experience is not lost when individual missions end.
He pointed to efforts to incorporate historic military campaigns, including the Longest Advance, into command curricula while digitising military archives as part of a wider attempt to preserve institutional knowledge and military heritage.
The emphasis on training and institutional memory suggests that the proposed cooperation is intended to go beyond the provision of military hardware.
For Nigeria, the more enduring objective is to build a force capable of absorbing new technologies, learning from battlefield experience and adapting its doctrine as security threats evolve.
The planned regional training component could also strengthen cooperation among Nigeria and its Lake Chad Basin neighbours, where cross-border threats have made coordination increasingly important.
By bringing personnel from Niger, Cameroon and Chad into future Operation HADIN KAI training cohorts, the programme could provide a practical platform for developing common procedures and improving cooperation during joint or complementary operations.
The proposed UK air defence support therefore sits within a broader partnership encompassing equipment, intelligence, training, force protection and institutional development.
The discussions in Abuja underline the increasingly technology-driven character of modern security operations, while also highlighting the Nigerian Army’s need to develop its personnel and structures alongside its equipment.

As Nigeria continues to confront insurgency, terrorism and other asymmetric threats, the effectiveness of such partnerships will ultimately depend on how successfully new capabilities are integrated into operations and translated into improved protection for troops and communities.
