President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address world leaders at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, with Nigeria expected to highlight economic reforms and seek stronger international cooperation on security across West Africa.

The appearance will mark Tinubu’s return to the high-level General Debate after Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the previous two sessions.

According to a provisional speaking schedule reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu is expected to speak during the morning session on the second day of the General Debate.

The schedule remains provisional and speaking arrangements can change depending on the attendance and programme of world leaders.

The 81st General Assembly session officially opens on September 8, while the high-level General Debate is scheduled for September 22 to 26 and September 28 at United Nations Headquarters.

The session is being led by Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”

Tinubu’s return to the global stage is expected to give Nigeria an opportunity to present the economic and governance reforms pursued by his administration since taking office in May 2023.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, previously confirmed that Tinubu had agreed to attend the assembly after briefing the President at the State House in Abuja.

“The president has generously agreed to attend the UNGA meeting of the United Nations,” Ibrahim said, describing the appearance as significant because Tinubu would have an opportunity to speak to the international community about the administration’s reform record.

The envoy said the Nigerian delegation would also use the gathering to advance a regional security initiative focused on border policing across West Africa.

Ibrahim described the sub-region’s porous borders as a major security challenge and said Nigeria intended to work with the United Nations to strengthen cooperation around border management, intelligence and regional security.

“The President is going to put a lot of effort into border policing for West African countries,” Ibrahim said, adding that Tinubu had issued specific directives on the matter.

The border-security agenda carries particular weight as West Africa continues to contend with militant violence, organised crime and cross-border trafficking.

Nigeria’s effort to bring the issue before the UN reflects a desire to move regional security discussions beyond individual national responses towards broader cooperation.

Ibrahim has also indicated that Nigeria wants West Africa to serve as a case study for coordinated border policing, with the UN providing support for the initiative.

He said he would return to UN headquarters to advance the proposal.

Beyond the main address, Tinubu is expected to participate in selected high-level meetings and side events dealing with issues including energy, education and healthcare.

Ibrahim said the administration was conscious of the need to avoid an overly crowded itinerary.

The President could also have an important diplomatic encounter with United States President Donald Trump during the gathering.

Ibrahim has not confirmed that a bilateral meeting between the two leaders has been scheduled, but he said Tinubu would occupy a prominent position near Trump during the General Assembly.

“I can tell you clearly that President Tinubu will be sitting very, very close to Donald Trump in the front row of the United Nations General Assembly,” Ibrahim said.

The possible proximity is notable because Tinubu and Trump have yet to hold a confirmed face-to-face bilateral meeting, although both leaders have had growing diplomatic engagement through their respective governments.

Tinubu’s return also comes after a two-year absence from the General Assembly.

He personally attended the 78th session in September 2023, where his address focused on Nigeria’s development ambitions, investment, security, climate action and reforms.

Shettima subsequently represented Nigeria at the 79th session in 2024 and the 80th session in 2025.

The decision to have the President personally attend this year’s gathering therefore gives the Nigerian government a fresh opportunity to shape international perceptions of its reform programme while strengthening diplomatic relationships.

The timing is also significant for the United Nations itself.

The 81st session comes as the organisation faces major global pressures involving armed conflicts, climate change, food insecurity, inequality and questions about the effectiveness of multilateral institutions.

The General Assembly’s 193 member states will use the annual debate to set out their priorities and positions on these challenges.

For Nigeria, the Tinubu UNGA address is likely to combine domestic economic messaging with wider regional concerns.

The administration will be seeking international recognition for its reform programme while asking partners to support efforts to improve security across West Africa.

The UN gathering will also take place during a period of leadership transition. Outgoing Secretary-General António Guterres is due to complete his second term on December 31, 2026, adding another layer of diplomatic significance to this year’s high-level meetings.

With the General Debate bringing together presidents, prime ministers and senior government officials from across the world, Tinubu’s September appearance is expected to provide a prominent platform for Nigeria to articulate its priorities, defend its reform record and press for stronger international partnerships.
