The Umaisha/Ugya lawmaker says 140 items donated to Umaisha General Hospital were allegedly sold before his follow-up visit.

Sa’ad raises alarm over missing Nasarawa hospital donations

Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly member representing Umaisha/Ugya Constituency, has raised concerns over the reported disappearance and alleged sale of 140 items he donated to General Hospital Umaisha in Toto Local Government Area, after returning to the facility on Saturday, August 22, 2026, several weeks after the donation.

The reported items included 50 ceiling fans, 40 standing fans and 50 orthopaedic mattresses, which Sa’ad said were donated to improve conditions for patients and healthcare workers at the facility.

According to the account circulating from the lawmaker’s follow-up visit, Sa’ad was confronted with the striking discovery that the donated items were no longer at the hospital.

The items were reportedly said to have been sold.

The allegation has raised questions about the management and accountability of donated public health equipment, although no independent evidence establishing who authorised or carried out the alleged sale was immediately available.

Available reports confirm that Sa’ad represents Umaisha/Ugya in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

The Assembly’s official members’ directory currently lists him as representing the constituency, although it identifies his party as the Peoples Democratic Party, not the All Progressives Congress.

That party affiliation is significant because some recent reports have described Sa’ad as an APC figure.

Historical records show that Sa’ad won the Umaisha/Ugya seat under the PDP in the 2023 election after the Court of Appeal declared him the rightful winner of the constituency’s disputed election.

The development comes against the backdrop of Sa’ad’s previous constituency interventions.

In March 2024, reports said the lawmaker distributed rice valued at about N23 million, registered 200 students for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination and supported constituents with additional Ramadan assistance.

In March 2025, Sa’ad was also reported to have distributed relief materials valued at N55 million, including 2,000 bags of 10kg rice, 100 bags of 50kg rice, 400 JAMB forms, 100 pieces of clothing and 200 mosquito nets, alongside cash grants for women.

More recently, a report published on August 23 said Sa’ad organised a free medical outreach at General Hospital Umaisha targeting 2,500 beneficiaries across six wards in the constituency.

The report quoted Toto LGA Chairman Pharmacist Ahmed Baba Yahaya praising the lawmaker’s interventions and saying Sa’ad had contributed to the revival of the hospital through health support facilities.

The same report identified Dr Abu Peter, the resident doctor in charge of General Hospital Umaisha, among those involved in the medical outreach.

The hospital itself is an established public healthcare facility.

Nasarawa State government budget records list General Hospital Umaisha as a government health institution, with budgetary allocations recorded for the facility.

The latest allegation therefore presents a potentially serious accountability issue, particularly if equipment donated for patient care was removed or disposed of without proper authorisation.

However, the claim that all 140 items were sold remains an allegation at this stage.

No statement from the Nasarawa State Hospitals Management Board, the management of General Hospital Umaisha, the relevant health authorities or law enforcement agencies confirming the alleged sale was identified in the sources reviewed.

There is also no verified information establishing the identities of those allegedly responsible, the circumstances surrounding the disposal, whether proceeds were generated, or what became of any such proceeds.

The controversy comes at a time when hospitals across Nigeria continue to face pressure over infrastructure, equipment and the availability of essential healthcare resources.

For Umaisha General Hospital, the reported disappearance of donated fans and mattresses could have a direct effect on the comfort of patients and the working environment for medical personnel if the items are indeed no longer available for use.

A transparent investigation would therefore be necessary to establish what happened to the donated equipment, who had custody of the items and whether any authorised administrative decision was involved.

Until the relevant authorities or hospital management provide their account, the reported sale should be treated as an allegation rather than an established fact.
