Veteran Nollywood actor Musiliu Dasofunjo, popularly known as Baba Johunomi, has spoken publicly about his prostate cancer battle in a video shared on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, by fellow actor Kunle Afod on Facebook, urging Nigerians to pay closer attention to unusual health symptoms and seek medical help early.

The veteran actor said his experience had taught him the importance of recognising warning signs before they become more serious.

Baba Johunomi explained that he first noticed an unusual change in his urine stream. Rather than flowing normally, he said his urine began splitting and spraying in different directions.

At the time, however, the actor did not consider the change serious.

“I first noticed a change in my urine. I was having a splitting urine stream, my urine sprays into different directions instead of single flow. But I didn’t take it serious,” he said.

The problem later progressed, according to the actor, as he began experiencing difficulty urinating. He was subsequently advised to seek medical attention.

Baba Johunomi said he underwent several tests and scans before being referred to the University College Hospital, UCH, in Ibadan for further assessment.

According to him, a specialist at UCH recommended another cancer test that would require a portion of tissue to be removed for examination. The actor admitted that he was frightened by the proposed procedure.

“I can’t allow the doctor to cut some parts of my body to do an advanced cancer test,” he said.

Despite his concerns about the procedure, Baba Johunomi chose to make his experience public in the hope that it would encourage greater awareness.

The actor expressed regret that his condition might not have reached its present stage if he had understood the significance of the early symptoms.

“It might not have gotten to this stage if I was aware of the symptoms earlier,” he said.

Baba Johunomi also said he was sharing his story so that others could learn from his experience, particularly at a time when he believes cancer is becoming increasingly common.

“I’m sharing this for people to learn and be informed because cancer is now on the rise,” he said.

His disclosure comes days after the death of fellow veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.

Hassan died on August 23, 2026, following a reported battle with cancer, bringing renewed attention to the health challenges facing some veteran members of the Nigerian film industry.

The Baba Johunomi cancer battle has consequently added another poignant voice to recent conversations about cancer awareness among Nollywood veterans.

For Baba Johunomi, the message is ultimately one of caution. His account highlights how seemingly unusual changes in the body can be easy to dismiss, while timely medical assessment can provide an opportunity for earlier investigation and care.
