Marketing makes awareness as recall requires branding

thenacre-campaign

Although communications is a discipline where clarity is currency, conflation of marketing and branding is one misnomer that plagues business models.

Yet, their mandate in an ideal setting is clear-cut. Some executives even misconstrue branding as miniaturised marketing (probably because the latter is an academic field of study). How wrong they are! Branding is the being, while marketing is the doing!

The misconception shouldn’t be, given the difference between how people see you (branding) and how they find you (marketing). Perhaps fitting both critical concepts into Top-of-Mind Awareness and Top-of-Mind Recall will provide the needed clarity. Marketing pursues TOMA, while TOMR is the outcome of branding.

Awareness and consideration are foundational stages of the customer journey, but buyers generally need to know a brand and recognise its relevance before they convert – this is what branding guarantees.

This is why marketing is how the right people get to know you, whereas branding is what they know about you. Both are intertwined but not synonymous. Great campaigns get noticed. Winning brands get remembered. After marketing makes you go viral, branding keeps you in the consciousness of the audience.

They’ve got to work hand in glove because as marketing ensures the customers come, branding gets them to keep coming back. They equally intersect via this question: “What will people remember my brand after the marketing tactic secures their attention?”

Branding is Upstream; Marketing is Downstream

Like the upstream sector of the petroleum industry, where exploration and production happen, branding sits at that level, working out the narrative arc, thought leadership, and reputational foundation that feed product demand.

Marketing, as the downstream (distribution), ensures demand generation through ICP definition, category and product positioning, PESO, and pipeline. While executing their distinct mandates, both relay data-driven insights that ensure product-market fit.

Branding is the driver because a killer marketing campaign can’t fix a brand with no clear identity behind it. Branding is upstream because it focuses on risks, reputation building, and crisis management. It shapes how decisions are understood, particularly by those who never asked to be affected by those decisions.

Branding is also upstream for building and maintaining relationships with not just clients but investors, internal teams, media, regulators, and communities.

For driving demand and business growth, marketing is downstream. This is supported by the definition of marketing as an understanding of the market and the decision to give it the right offer that you can equally profit from. Beyond attracting attention, the function moves people through funnels – from awareness to purchase.

Marketing owns the brand voice as it targets customers and prospects. Marketing brings in external perspectives that branding needs to build loyalty.

The customer and market insights it pulls are used for positioning and value propositions, and to improve the experience people have with an organisation.

One learns from the other what customers actually value, how to make a proposition distinctive and scalability opportunities.

Marketing is Quantitative; Branding is Qualitative

Marketing offers quantitative metrics by being measurable, targetable, and easy to compute on a dashboard. This is because it measures reach, conversion rate and revenue impact. Marketing creates awareness, attracts potential customers, promotes offers and drives sales.

It also tracks customer relationship management (CRM), customer acquisition cost (CAC), pipeline, funnels and leads. These will always yield quantitative data.

Branding, on the other hand, deals in qualitative rubrics such as trust, reputational exposure, relationship health, and alignment. Through choreographed storytelling, it entrenches the emotional shortcut the brain takes when people encounter a business.

Branding shapes your identity, positioning, reputation, perceived value and customer experience. If marketing focuses on how many people heard about a product, branding is why they think or feel a certain way about the product; the former communicates numerically, while the latter waxes lexical.

In other words, the discipline that seeks to answer, “How do we drive demand?” (marketing) will deal with numbers, while the one that asks what the company’s people and publics should believe and trust (branding) answers with words.

Both are highly instrumental to business success because not everything that can be counted counts, and not all that counts can be counted. The brand remains an identity made visible by marketing.

Branding can be the tone of your messaging – that one-line hook that ends the jingle or copy, your choice of colours, and all the little things that make up the big picture.

Marketing, conversely, is how you take those unique values and put them in front of the right people. Marketing can point to a spike, hype, a launch, or sales as success.

For branding, satisfactory outcomes often come in the form of a seamless run with nothing going amiss, an emotional connection or a stakeholder giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Harder to put on a dashboard, branding is what remains after a campaign has run its course. Reach disappears. Media budgets get exhausted.

Creatives get replaced. Algorithms change. But distinctive assets, associations, and emotions can compound for decades into reputation. The real job of branding is to be the shortcut in memory so that people can prefer you above the competition. It is the quest of every business to own this shortcut.

Engines Downplay What Marketing Buys but Brandish What Branding Earns

We are now in an era where buyers no longer surf a company’s website for information about a product or service. They direct their questions to answer engines like ChatGPT or Gemini.

AI algorithms rarely cite or recommend a solution based on content from owned and paid media. This means that answer engines ignore what marketing buys in favour of what branding earns.

This visibility is attainable when marketers and brand custodians leverage AI to analyse customer data and pain points and uncover patterns.

These insights are then published in personalised newsletters, product recommendations, and offers. As people see their needs in the content, with the ensuing traffic, answer engines get attracted as well.

Consumers are not just searching Google or checking social media pages for recommendations anymore. They are increasingly asking AI tools what to buy, who to trust, where to go and which brands to consider. Muck Rack analysis found that out of over a million AI prompts. Earned, third-party media supplied 85% of the citations. Meltwater and AirOps measured different data and reached the same range. Paid and advertorial content supplied just 0.3%.

Generative engines are increasingly drawing on the wider digital footprint of a brand: credible publications, reviews, expert voices, websites and third-party mentions.

Emerging research is showing just how important those external sources can be to AI visibility. And that feels like a pretty compelling reason to rethink where branding finds expression.

There is a need to create credibility beyond the channels a brand controls. The credibility, authority and relevance that come from earned media and third-party validation are how brands are discovered and represented by AI.

What Makes Marketing and Branding Complementary, Not Competitive

Ø Excellent marketing brings people to the door and into the room while bespoke branding makes them stay.

Ø Branding uses what makes you tick to remind prospective customers why you should be preferred; marketing puts those unique attributes in front of the right people.

Ø As marketing creates momentum and a moment of consideration, branding builds memory and pushes the business up the target audience’s patronage order.

Ø One sells the solution (reason to buy); the other builds credibility. It takes credibility for people to trust a prescribed solution.

Perfect-Aesthetic-social-1

Ø A business can have a great marketing campaign, but if its branding feels unclear or inconsistent, people will notice the business without trusting it.

Ø Marketing alone makes you a loud voice in a noisy environment, while branding in a silo makes you a gem no one can find.

Ø Branding ensures that the value promoted by marketing sticks in people’s minds, leading them to choose the product when it’s time to buy.

Ø Marketing can fill a funnel, but branding is what makes people feel good about their buying decision.
