The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed Mrs Ramatu Ibrahim as Acting Bursar in Abuja on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following the killing of the university’s Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, in Zamfara State on September 6.

The appointment, announced by NOUN Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Oladipo Ajayi, takes effect from September 8 and will remain in force until further notice.

Ajayi said the decision was taken to ensure continuity in the university’s financial administration following Marafa’s death.

The appointment was approved by NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Professor Uduma Uduma, with the concurrence of Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Malam Isa Yuguda.

Ibrahim, who previously served as Deputy Bursar, Treasury, brings extensive experience in the university’s financial operations to the new role.

She has worked across several operational units within the Bursary Department, gaining experience in accounting, financial management, treasury operations and related administrative processes.

As Deputy Bursar, Treasury, Ibrahim was responsible for providing professional leadership and oversight of the university’s treasury activities.

The university said her experience and professional background would position her to maintain efficient, transparent and accountable financial services during the transition.

NOUN Acting Bursar Ibrahim takes over at a difficult moment for the institution following the death of Marafa, whom the university described as a dedicated and dependable officer.

According to the university management, Marafa served NOUN with commitment, professionalism and integrity, making valuable contributions to its financial administration and broader institutional development.

His contributions, management said, would be remembered with gratitude.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in Ibrahim’s integrity, diligence and expertise, while congratulating her on the appointment and urging members of the university community to support her in the new role.

The university also appealed for the necessary cooperation from staff and other stakeholders as Ibrahim assumes responsibility for its financial operations.

The swift appointment reflects NOUN’s effort to maintain institutional stability and prevent disruption to essential financial functions following the sudden loss of its substantive Bursar.
