The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the FGN Power Company, in collaboration with Siemens Energy and the German development agency GIZ, has launched the FG free solar training programme aimed at equipping Nigerians with practical skills in solar photovoltaic installation.
The initiative, introduced under the Siemens Energy Education and Development project, seeks to strengthen the country’s renewable energy workforce at a time when demand for alternative power solutions continues to rise.

The programme is supported by the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, co-funded by the European Union and the German Government.
According to a statement released by FGN Power Company on Wednesday, the training will run for three weeks and combine classroom instruction with hands-on practical sessions, technical site visits and competency assessments.
Successful participants will receive certification from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.
“The programme is open to applicants with practical experience as well as those without formal education or prior practical experience,” the statement read. “Recent graduates and young professionals in relevant fields are also encouraged to apply.”
The training will take place at designated centres in Lagos and Abeokuta, Ogun State, with each cohort undergoing an intensive onsite learning experience.
While tuition and meals will be provided at no cost, participants are expected to cover their own accommodation and transportation.
Officials say the initiative reflects a decisive effort to bridge Nigeria’s technical skills gap in the renewable energy sector.
With solar adoption steadily increasing across households and businesses, the programme is positioned as a timely response to both unemployment and energy challenges.
In recent years, the Federal Government has introduced several capacity-building schemes, including a digital academy that enrolled 16,000 Nigerians in its first cohort.
Analysts note that such programmes are gradually shaping a more resilient and skilled workforce, particularly among young people.
Applications for the FG free solar training are open until 4pm on Friday, September 18, 2026.
Interested candidates are required to submit an online expression of interest, providing personal details, educational background and, where applicable, supporting documents such as CVs and certificates.
A project coordinator involved in the rollout described the initiative as “a transformative opportunity for Nigerians to gain industry-relevant skills that can unlock sustainable careers.”
