Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, through the Ekiti State Government, has commenced a major Ekiti NYSC camp upgrade at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Emure-Ise-Orun, signalling a renewed commitment to youth welfare and infrastructure development.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Gold Adedayo, confirmed the development during an inspection tour of the facility on Wednesday, revealing that no fewer than 19 projects are currently underway across the camp.

Mr Gold Adedayo described the intervention as a deliberate and transformative step by the administration to reposition the orientation camp.

“The massive renovation of this facility is a demonstration of the Governor Oyebanji administration’s commitment to youth development.

The upgrade, upon completion, will transform the camp into one of the best NYSC orientation facilities in the country,” Mr Gold Adedayo said.

The ongoing works span critical infrastructure, including the construction and rehabilitation of hostels, a gatehouse, registration centre, dining hall, kitchen, stores and perimeter fencing.

Five male hostels and seven female hostels are among the facilities receiving attention, alongside the lodge for the NYSC State Coordinator.

Officials supervising the project expressed satisfaction with both the pace and quality of work, noting that contractors have adhered closely to timelines.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Projects, Mr Olubunmi Talabi, stated that the projects are being executed simultaneously to ensure timely completion.

Mr Olubunmi Talabi added that solar-powered lighting systems would be installed across the camp to enhance security and improve living conditions.

“Solar lighting solutions will be installed across all buildings and facilities within the camp to enhance illumination, improve security and provide a better experience for corps members and camp officials,” Mr Olubunmi Talabi said.

The adoption of solar energy represents a notable secondary highlight, aligning the project with broader sustainability goals while addressing long-standing power challenges within orientation camps nationwide.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Adeola Ige, reflected on the camp’s previous state and welcomed the intervention, noting that the improvements would have a significant impact on incoming corps members.

The initiative follows Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s earlier pledge to revamp the facility, part of a wider effort to improve public infrastructure and youth-focused programmes in Ekiti State.

Observers note that similar upgrades across NYSC camps in Nigeria have often lagged, making the Ekiti NYSC camp upgrade a potentially decisive benchmark for other states.

With local contractors and artisans engaged under the state’s local content policy, the project is also expected to stimulate economic activity within the host community.

Authorities estimate that the renovation will be completed within two months, ahead of the next orientation exercise.

As preparations continue, stakeholders express cautious optimism that the upgraded facility will deliver a more conducive and modern environment for thousands of corps members posted to the state each year.
