Ødegaard fires Arsenal past Napoli in UCL opener

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard delivered a decisive moment of quality as Ødegaard seals Arsenal win with a 75th-minute strike, guiding Mikel Arteta’s side to a composed 1-0 victory over Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in their UEFA Champions League opener.

Arsenal, runners-up in last season’s competition, arrived in Naples with quiet confidence and quickly imposed control.

Mikel Arteta’s team dominated possession for long spells, registering more than 20 attempts on goal, yet found Napoli’s defensive structure difficult to break down.

The breakthrough came when substitute Christos Tzolis threaded a precise pass into space, allowing Martin Ødegaard, 27, to curl a left-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Alex Meret and in off the far post.

The goal, both clinical and composed, reflected Arsenal’s persistent attacking intent.

Speaking after the match, Ødegaard said, “We controlled most parts of the game, and it was important to stay patient. When the chance came, I just focused on hitting it cleanly.”

Napoli, under Massimiliano Allegri, struggled to create clear openings, particularly in the absence of key midfielder Scott McTominay.

Despite brief spells of pressure, the Italian side rarely tested Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, whose calm presence contributed to a solid defensive display.

Earlier in the contest, Arsenal had created several promising chances.

Mikel Merino directed a header straight at Meret, while Bukayo Saka missed a clear opportunity just before half-time.

Defender Piero Hincapié also failed to convert from close range early in the second half, highlighting the visitors’ inefficiency in front of goal.

Arteta’s tactical adjustments proved significant.

The introduction of Tzolis and Noni Madueke injected renewed energy into the attack, with the former directly influencing the winning goal.

Although Madueke later missed a one-on-one chance, Arsenal’s control of the match remained largely unchallenged.

The result extends Arsenal’s strong start to the 2026 season across all competitions and reinforces belief within the squad following last season’s near success in Europe.

Napoli, by contrast, will reflect on missed opportunities to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm.

Allegri’s side now faces pressure to respond in upcoming fixtures as the group stage intensifies.

For Arsenal, the evening offered more than three points.

It underlined a resilient mentality and a capacity to deliver in demanding away environments, with Ødegaard seals Arsenal win standing as a defining moment in an assured European start.
