The Federal Ministry of Education has invited qualified Nigerian university graduates to apply for the UK Commonwealth Scholarship 2027/2028, offering opportunities for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom from September or October 2027.
The scholarship opportunity covers one-year taught Master’s programmes and doctoral studies of up to three years, according to the ministry’s notice.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK separately confirms that applications for the 2027/28 Master’s scholarship round opened on September 8, 2026 and will close at 4pm British Summer Time on October 20, 2026.

For Master’s applicants, the Nigerian government’s requirements include a first degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division.
PhD applicants are required to have a relevant Master’s degree in addition to at least a Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.
Applicants in both categories are expected to have secured admission from at least two UK institutions.
Prospective PhD candidates must additionally provide a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor at their chosen UK institution.
Evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps is also among the requirements listed by the Federal Ministry of Education.
The selection process will consider three principal areas: academic merit, development impact after completion and the quality of the proposed study plan.
The emphasis on development impact reflects the wider purpose of Commonwealth scholarships, which are designed to equip talented candidates with skills and knowledge that can contribute to sustainable development in their home countries.
How Nigerians can apply
Applicants are required to submit their applications electronically through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s application system, CSC Central.
The commission says applications and supporting documents must be submitted through its online system.
Applicants should prepare their academic and supporting documents before completing the online application.
The Nigerian government’s notice requires applicants to upload scanned copies of documents including passport photographs, academic transcripts, birth certificates and UK university admission letters.
Candidates should also ensure that the required UK university admissions are reflected in their applications.
After completing the application, applicants are expected to create a PDF copy of the completed form, download and print a hard copy for submission at the designated interview venue under Nigeria’s nomination process.
Applicants holding foreign certificates that are not in English are required to provide official English translations and evaluation documents.
The Federal Ministry of Education has also advised prospective candidates to ensure that their proposed programmes respond to Nigeria’s development priorities.
Those priorities include education, health, economic growth and the private sector, governance and conflict, climate and the environment, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, and humanitarian disasters and emergencies.
The advice means applicants will need to demonstrate more than academic ambition.
A convincing study proposal should explain how the proposed training could translate into measurable benefits after the applicant returns to Nigeria.
The UK Commonwealth Scholarship 2027/2028 is part of a broader Commonwealth initiative supporting postgraduate education and development across eligible Commonwealth countries.
