Alan Shearer criticises controversial Awoniyi red card

Former England striker and football pundit Alan Shearer has reignited debate around officiating standards as Alan Shearer Criticises the decision to send off Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi during Coventry City’s 5-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The incident occurred early in the second half when Taiwo Awoniyi challenged Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper for an aerial ball.

Contact was made with De Cuyper’s face, prompting referee Tony Harrington to review the situation via VAR before issuing a straight red card for violent conduct.

Alan Shearer Criticises the ruling after reviewing the footage multiple times, arguing that the context of the challenge was not properly considered.

“Two players are competing for the ball. He jumps, his arm comes up naturally and catches De Cuyper. There’s contact. Nobody is denying that,” Alan Shearer said. “But contact with somebody’s face cannot automatically mean violent conduct.”

The former Newcastle United forward suggested that such movements are often unavoidable in aerial duels, where balance and elevation require the use of arms.

Alan Shearer added that officials should apply greater nuance rather than relying on strict interpretations that may not reflect the nature of the game.

The Premier League Match Centre later confirmed that VAR upheld the decision, classifying the incident as violent conduct under current regulations.

However, the call has added to growing concerns about consistency in officiating, particularly in situations involving subjective judgement.

For Coventry City, the dismissal proved decisive.

Already trailing, the team struggled to recover with ten men as Brighton extended their dominance to secure a comprehensive victory.

The result leaves Coventry with four consecutive league defeats without scoring, underlining a difficult start to the campaign.

The controversy comes amid increasing scrutiny of refereeing decisions across the Premier League.

Recent incidents, including disputed VAR calls in high-profile matches, have intensified calls for clearer guidelines and improved communication around decisions.

While the red card will stand, Alan Shearer Criticises the outcome as part of a broader conversation about fairness and interpretation in modern football, where technology continues to shape the game but not without debate.
