Joe Petraro-Hyppolite, a 13-year-old student from Long Island, New York, is preparing to begin a master’s programme at New York University after completing his undergraduate degree in May 2027, in an extraordinary academic journey that has already included a high school diploma at 11 and a reported IQ of 168.

Petraro-Hyppolite has been accepted into an NYU master’s programme in sports management, with additional studies involving kinesiology and biology, according to CBS News.

The teenager’s academic progress has placed him among a small number of exceptionally young students pursuing university-level education alongside classmates many years older.

“My master’s is going to be sports management but other than [that] it’s also kinesiology and biology,” Petraro-Hyppolite said.

Although the next stage represents an unusual academic milestone, Petraro-Hyppolite said the prospect brings a mixture of excitement and understandable nerves.

“Yeah, I mean, who wouldn’t be? But then again, I am also excited, because new doors are opening,” he said.

His academic record had already attracted attention before the NYU admission.

Petraro-Hyppolite reportedly scored 1,590 on the SAT at the age of 10 and completed his high school education when he was 11.

He has also studied at Louisiana State University and is currently completing his undergraduate education while working alongside considerably older students.

The age difference can sometimes surprise his classmates.

Petraro-Hyppolite said fellow students occasionally react with disbelief when they discover that the person studying alongside them is only 13.

Behind the remarkable academic achievements, however, his educational journey has included challenges.

His mother, Anne Petraro-Hyppolite, said her son’s progress was particularly meaningful because he had previously been placed in special education classes after being diagnosed with Tourette syndrome.

“It’s just surreal. When he graduated high school so young, it was surreal, but this is … everything he does is surreal. He just loves to learn. He is like a sponge,” she said.

Petraro-Hyppolite himself takes a more matter-of-fact view of his abilities.

He said his achievements should not be interpreted as meaning that everything comes effortlessly to him.

“It’s not like I was shot out the womb knowing everything I know. I have to learn it once or twice. Then I’ll know,” he said.

Away from classrooms and university work, Petraro-Hyppolite also spends time volunteering at a nursing home in the Five Towns area of Long Island.

The community work provides another dimension to the story of a teenager whose education has progressed at an extraordinary pace.

Despite his current focus on sports management, kinesiology and biology, Petraro-Hyppolite has a different ambition for his eventual career.

The teenager hopes to become a palaeontologist, suggesting that his interests extend well beyond the academic fields he is currently pursuing.

His planned progression also offers a striking perspective on the pace of his education.

If Petraro-Hyppolite completes the NYU master’s programme as planned, he could graduate at roughly the same time that he reaches the legal driving age in New York.

For Petraro-Hyppolite and his family, however, the achievement appears to be less about age than about continuing to follow his appetite for learning.

His mother described him as someone who “just loves to learn”, while Petraro-Hyppolite’s own comments point to a willingness to approach advanced study as a process of learning rather than an effortless display of ability.

The upcoming NYU programme will mark another remarkable chapter in that journey, as the Long Island teenager prepares to enter graduate-level study while still in his early teens.
