Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their quarter-final clash in Łódź, Poland.

The Nigerian side looked destined to force the contest into extra time after a disciplined defensive display, but Colombia’s Valerin Loboa struck in the 92nd minute to send the South Americans into the semi-finals.

The first half ended goalless, with both teams creating opportunities in a closely contested encounter. Nigeria came close through Janet Akekoromowei, whose powerful effort rattled the crossbar, while defender Tumininu Adeshina also forced Colombian goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo into a fine save from long range.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card following a VAR review, reducing the Falconets to 10 players for the closing stages of the match.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Falconets defended resolutely and continued to threaten on the counterattack. However, their resistance was finally broken deep into stoppage time when Loboa fired home the decisive goal to end Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the last four.

The defeat brings to an end an impressive tournament for Coach Moses Aduku’s side, who had reached the quarter-finals after an outstanding 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16.

Although the Falconets’ quest for a third FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final appearance ended in the last eight, their performances throughout the competition reinforced Nigeria’s reputation as one of the strongest nations in women’s youth football.
