Xavi takes over as Netherlands head coach

The former Barcelona manager returns to the dugout with a contract through the 2030 World Cup after Ronald Koeman’s departure

Xavi Hernández, the former Barcelona head coach, was appointed Netherlands manager on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, returning to football management with a contract running through the 2030 World Cup and taking charge of a national side for the first time.

The appointment marks a fresh and significant chapter in Xavi’s coaching career after he left Barcelona in 2024 following three seasons in charge.

The 46-year-old Spaniard succeeds Ronald Koeman, whose second spell as Netherlands manager ended after the Oranje were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.

Xavi had been out of management since leaving Barcelona and will now return to the touchline with the opportunity to shape one of Europe’s most historic international teams.

The appointment was first reported as an agreement by football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano before the Dutch federation confirmed Xavi as the new head coach. Romano described the deal as completed and said the agreement had been signed on Wednesday.

The move gives Xavi an intriguing tactical fit. His coaching philosophy has been heavily influenced by the possession-based principles associated with Johan Cruyff, a footballing tradition that has deep roots in the Netherlands as well as Barcelona.

Xavi has also made clear that he wants his teams to play attacking football based on possession and creativity.

“The Netherlands has a rich football culture and a clear vision that also appeals to me enormously: attacking football, based on ball possession, with creativity, passion and conviction,” Xavi said following his appointment.

The Spaniard added that winning would remain the priority, but said he wanted the team to achieve success in a manner that reflected those characteristics and gave supporters something to enjoy.

His arrival also represents a historic change for the Netherlands. Xavi becomes the first foreign coach to lead the Dutch men’s national team since Austrian Ernst Happel in 1978.

The choice comes after the Netherlands considered several candidates for the position, including former Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

Slot previously explained that he was not interested in taking the national-team job because he wanted to remain involved in club football, leaving the Dutch federation to pursue alternatives.

Xavi’s coaching career began at Al Sadd in Qatar before he returned to Barcelona, where he took charge of the club’s first team in November 2021.

His Barcelona tenure produced a LaLiga title and the Spanish Super Cup, although his time at the Catalan club also included periods of intense pressure and inconsistency.

His return to management therefore presents an opportunity to reshape his reputation on an international stage.

The Netherlands job will require Xavi to adapt his methods to the rhythm of international football, where coaches have limited training time with players and must build a coherent system around a squad assembled only periodically.

That challenge could also suit his footballing background. As a former Spain international and one of the most influential midfielders of his generation, Xavi spent much of his playing career operating within a possession-oriented system built around technical quality, movement and control.

His first competitive assignment is expected to come in the Nations League against Germany on September 24. (Reuters)

The immediate objective will be to restore confidence after the Netherlands’ disappointing early exit from the 2026 World Cup, while developing a team capable of competing for major honours at Euro 2028 and beyond.

For Xavi, the appointment is more than a return to club management in another setting. It is his first opportunity to build an international team and to test his footballing philosophy against Europe’s strongest national sides.

For the Netherlands, the decision is an ambitious attempt to begin a new era with a coach whose ideas are closely connected to a football tradition the country has helped shape.

The partnership carries considerable expectations, but it also offers a potentially compelling match between Xavi’s possession-based philosophy and the Netherlands’ longstanding commitment to attacking football.
