Afghan cyclist Fariba Hashimi, a 23-year-old national rider now based in Italy, secured a remarkable Fariba Hashimi Asian Games Silver medal in the women’s road race at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, delivering a powerful moment of resilience on the international stage.

Fariba Hashimi finished second in the road race final at the Shinshiro Cycling Road Course in Aichi Prefecture, crossing the line behind China’s Guo Li, who claimed gold, while Hong Kong’s Leung Wing Yee took bronze.

The result marked a significant improvement on her earlier performance in the Games, where Fariba Hashimi placed seventh in the women’s individual time trial, finishing the 24.2-kilometre course two minutes and three seconds behind Kazakhstan’s Rinata Sultanova.

The silver medal carries deeper meaning given the extraordinary path that brought Fariba Hashimi to elite competition. Growing up in Afghanistan, she began cycling at the age of 15 alongside her sister, Yulduz Hashimi, at a time when female participation in sport faced severe social resistance.

“I always dressed as a man to go to training, wearing two or three different masks so people would not recognise or attack me,” Fariba Hashimi said, recalling the lengths she took to continue riding safely. “I was scared of them finding me.”

Fariba Hashimi added that hostility from members of the public often disrupted training sessions. “People were throwing bottles at me. They were trying to make us go home by being aggressive and attacking us,” she said.

Following the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, Fariba Hashimi left Afghanistan and relocated to Italy, where she and her sister have continued to develop their cycling careers.

The pair later represented Afghanistan at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, highlighting their growing presence on the global stage.

Her latest podium finish comes amid ongoing restrictions on women’s education, employment and public life in Afghanistan, placing added significance on her achievement as both a sporting and symbolic milestone.

“For me it’s not just about my performance but showing my country a woman in this situation,” Fariba Hashimi said. “We are still alive and still fighting.”

The Asian Games, one of the continent’s premier multi-sport events, have historically provided a platform for emerging athletes from developing sporting nations to gain exposure and compete at elite level.

Afghanistan’s participation, particularly in women’s events, has remained limited in recent years due to political and social challenges.

Fariba Hashimi’s silver medal therefore stands as a defining and uplifting moment, not only for Afghan cycling but for a broader generation of athletes seeking opportunity beyond restrictive environments.

Looking ahead, Fariba Hashimi expressed hope that future athletes would not face the same barriers. “I hope something can change so the next generation can come from inside of the country to compete at the Asian Games, exploring the world and winning medals,” she said.

Her achievement in Aichi adds to Afghanistan’s modest but growing record at the Games and underscores the enduring role of sport as a platform for visibility, courage and progress.
