The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, 30, of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, over the alleged Enugu girlfriend death of a woman identified as Chinyere, SP Daniel Ndukwe, police public relations officer, said on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.

Her surname, age and address had not been confirmed. Officers were still trying to find her relatives.

SP Daniel Ndukwe said the suspect was taken from an angry crowd and arrested by Awkunanaw Division at about 6:30pm on Monday, 21 September, after a report that he had killed his girlfriend.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly killed the victim on September 19, wrapped her remains in a nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment. The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the police.”

The body was moved to a mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.

Police said that in early questioning the suspect admitted the killing and linked it to an argument about who had infected the other with HIV.

According to that account, he struck her during the row and then hid the body. Those details are his alleged confession, not a court finding.

Commissioner of Police Bitrus Giwa has ordered the State CID to investigate the circumstances and to charge the suspect when the inquiry is done.

He also advised the public, especially young women, to tell trusted relatives or friends where they are going and to be careful about whom they visit.
