The family of a 59-year-old woman has demanded ₦500 million in compensation from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), alleging that medical negligence and the wrongful administration of Vecuronium resulted in her death.

According to the family, the woman was admitted to LASUTH for treatment but allegedly suffered complications after she was administered Vecuronium, a prescription medication commonly used during surgical procedures to induce muscle relaxation under controlled anaesthesia. They claim the drug was wrongly given, leading to her death.

In a petition addressed to the hospital management, the relatives accused LASUTH of negligence and demanded accountability over the circumstances surrounding the incident. They also called for a thorough investigation into the treatment administered to the deceased and requested compensation for the family’s loss.

The family’s legal representatives argued that healthcare professionals owe patients a duty of care and insisted that any breach resulting in preventable death should attract appropriate legal and institutional consequences.

LASUTH has acknowledged the incident and said the matter is under review. The hospital stated that it remains committed to patient safety and due process, adding that investigations would determine the facts surrounding the patient’s treatment and death.
