Actress and filmmaker Angela Eguavoen has raised concerns about what she sees as Nollywood’s growing emphasis on popularity and commercial appeal at the expense of talent and artistic quality.

Eguavoen argued that while commercial success remains important to the sustainability of the Nigerian film industry, popularity should not become the main measure of talent or determine who gets opportunities.

She called for a balance between the business side of filmmaking and the creative standards needed to sustain Nollywood’s long-term growth.

Her comments come as the Nigerian film industry continues to undergo significant changes in how films are produced, distributed and consumed. YouTube, in particular, has become an increasingly important platform for Nigerian filmmakers, providing creators with direct access to large audiences and new sources of revenue.

Eguavoen herself has been part of that digital shift. Recent reporting has highlighted her experience as an actress and filmmaker who moved into YouTube production, where she has spoken about the financial opportunities available to creators through the platform.

However, the growth of digital filmmaking has also intensified debates about the balance between audience demand, profitability and production quality.

Eguavoen’s position is that commercial considerations should not come at the expense of genuine talent and the craft of filmmaking. She warned that an industry that consistently rewards visibility over ability could undermine the quality of productions and weaken Nollywood’s long-term prospects.

The debate comes at a time when Nigerian films are reaching increasingly large audiences through cinemas, streaming platforms and YouTube. Industry reporting has also pointed to growing demand for local stories, with Nigerian cinema attendance and box-office revenues recording significant growth in recent years.

At the same time, the expansion of YouTube has created opportunities for filmmakers to bypass traditional distribution channels and build audiences directly. Eguavoen has described the platform as a significant change for Nigerian filmmakers, particularly because of its potential to provide stronger financial returns and wider audience reach.

Her concerns therefore highlight a wider question facing Nollywood: how to pursue commercial success while maintaining strong storytelling, professional performance and artistic standards.
