OSOGBO, Osun State, September 29, 2026: The National Orientation Agency, Osun State Directorate, has urged residents to prioritise heart health as Nigeria joins communities worldwide in marking World Heart Day 2026 on Tuesday.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued by NOA Osun spokesperson, Bunmi Olaseinde, on behalf of the State Director, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen.

This year’s campaign carries the theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat”, with attention focused on cardiovascular disease, prevention and the importance of recognising potentially serious warning signs.

Adefarasin said greater awareness and preventive action were essential to reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases among Nigerians.

He identified high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption as major risk factors.

“High blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases,” Adefarasin said.

He encouraged residents to regularly check their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, noting that early detection can help people take appropriate steps to protect their health.

The NOA director also advised residents to reduce their consumption of salt, sugar and fried foods while eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol consumption, managing stress and getting adequate rest were also recommended.

The World Health Organisation identifies unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption as important behavioural risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

High blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and high cholesterol are also important risk factors.

Adefarasin urged residents not to ignore symptoms that could indicate a serious cardiovascular problem.

Chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness, facial drooping and speech difficulties can require urgent medical attention, particularly when they appear suddenly.

“Know your numbers, make healthy choices, stay active and don’t ignore warning signs. Don’t miss the beat, your heart matters,” Adefarasin said.

He also called on families, community leaders, schools, workplaces and healthcare institutions to promote healthier habits and strengthen public awareness about cardiovascular disease.

The appeal comes as cardiovascular disease remains a major global health challenge.

While some risk factors cannot be changed, many are linked to lifestyle and can be addressed through healthier choices, regular checks and timely medical care.

For Osun residents, the message on World Heart Day 2026 is therefore both simple and practical: know your health numbers, stay active, eat well and do not dismiss warning signs.
