Ex-Nigerian Banker Francis Ushie says he spent life savings moving wife, children to Canada before they cut him off

Former Nigerian banker Francis Ushie has appealed to the public for help after recounting how he says his attempt to secure a better future for his wife and children in Canada left him separated from his family, financially devastated and homeless in Lagos.

Ushie said in a social media interview that he committed his life savings to the family’s relocation after he and his wife obtained Canadian permanent residency, believing the move would give the family a fresh start.

According to Ushie, the outcome was dramatically different from what he had expected.

He alleged that shortly after the family arrived in Canada, his wife stopped communicating with him, blocked his telephone number and kept her new residential address from him.

Ushie further claimed that contact with his children was also cut off.

“She also stopped my children from communicating with me entirely,” he said.

The former banker said the breakdown of the relationship was particularly painful because he had made significant financial sacrifices to facilitate the family’s relocation.

Ushie said he even paid two years’ rent in advance in Canada before the family travelled, believing that the arrangement would provide stability while they settled into their new life.

“I even paid two years’ rent in advance in Canada, but I didn’t know she was planning to take my children away from me,” he said.

The former banker said problems in the marriage had existed before the family left Nigeria.

He alleged that infidelity had contributed to the breakdown of the relationship but said he remained hopeful that moving to Canada would give the couple an opportunity to rebuild their marriage.

“This whole thing started with infidelity on her own part,” Ushie said. “But I felt that when we leave Nigeria to Canada, things would be better.”

That hope, according to Ushie, ultimately failed to materialise.

Instead, he said he found himself separated from the wife and children for years and struggling to rebuild his own life after spending much of his financial resources on the relocation.

Ushie said the consequences have been severe.

He claimed that he has spent about 13 years living in difficult circumstances and is now homeless and without the financial security he once enjoyed as a banker.

His story has since attracted attention online, with his account prompting discussions about migration, family separation, financial sacrifice and the sometimes painful realities behind the dream of starting a new life abroad.

For Ushie, however, the central issue remains his estrangement from his children.

He said he wants his children to understand that his decision to relocate the family was motivated by what he believed was their best interest.

“I hope my children get to see this video and know that I suffered to send them to Canada with everything I had,” he said.

Despite the years of separation, Ushie said he has not completely abandoned the possibility of reconciliation.

He said he remains willing to forgive his wife and attempt to rebuild the family relationship if she is prepared to cooperate.

“I’m still ready to reconcile with my wife if she’s willing to do the same,” he said.

Ushie’s account also reflects the difficult personal consequences that can follow when migration plans and family relationships unravel at the same time.

He said he is considering contacting Canadian authorities to present his account and explain what happened after the family moved.

“I’m still considering writing to the Canadian government to let them know what transpired,” he said.

It is not clear from Ushie’s account what legal proceedings, if any, have taken place in Canada or Nigeria concerning the marriage, custody of the children or his alleged loss of contact with his family.

His claims about his wife’s actions and the circumstances surrounding his separation from his children have also not been independently verified.

For now, Ushie’s appeal is both personal and deeply emotional.

The former banker says he sacrificed his career, savings and financial security in pursuit of a better future for his family.

More than a decade later, he is seeking help while hoping that his story will eventually reach the children he says he has been separated from for years.

His experience is a sobering reminder that behind the promise of migration and a new beginning can lie complicated family realities that are often invisible to those watching from afar.

For Ushie, the greatest loss is not simply the money he says he spent or the years he says he has endured in hardship.

It is the distance between him and the family he says he made those sacrifices for.
