Suspected bandits ambushed traders travelling under Nigerian Army escort in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Sunday, 11 October 2026, leaving at least 22 people feared dead and several others injured, according to initial reports.

Malam Aminu Gwashi, a resident who confirmed the incident, said security personnel were among those reportedly killed in the attack along the route from Gurusu to Gwashi.

The traders were travelling to Gwashi to attend the community’s weekly market when the attackers struck.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of civilians and security personnel navigating rural roads in Zamfara, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted communities and disrupted commercial activities.

Malam Aminu Gwashi said the injured victims were taken to Bukkuyum General Hospital for treatment.

However, the precise number of fatalities, the identities of those killed and the circumstances surrounding the ambush remained unclear in the initial account.

The reported death toll has also varied across media reports. An investigation published by FIJ on Sunday cited security researcher Malik Samuel, who reported 27 deaths in an attack involving civilians and security personnel escorting residents towards Nasarawa Market in Bukkuyum. Samuel wrote on X: “4 soldiers, 3 policemen and 1 civil defence personnel died in the attack.”

The differing accounts have not established whether the reports describe the same incident or separate attacks.

The figures therefore remain unverified, and an official casualty breakdown is needed to clarify the scale of the violence.

Efforts to obtain a response from the military following the reported Gurusu to Gwashi ambush were unsuccessful.

Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Information Officer of Operation Fansan Yamma, did not answer calls seeking comment, while Major Osoba Olaniyi, the Information Officer of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, also did not respond.

As of the time of the initial report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Zamfara State Police Command had issued an official statement confirming the incident or the reported death toll.

The latest violence comes amid persistent security challenges across Zamfara, one of several states in Nigeria’s North-West where armed groups have carried out killings, kidnappings and attacks on rural communities.

Such violence has placed pressure on residents who depend on farming, local markets and road travel to sustain their livelihoods.

The Gurusu to Gwashi road has previously featured in security operations.

In August 2026, troops reportedly responded to an improvised explosive device planted along the route in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The operation underscored the risks facing motorists, traders and other road users travelling through the area.

In a separate operation reported in August, troops of Operation Fansan Yamma also responded to abduction attempts in Zamfara and rescued seven people, including four women and three children, along the Gurusu to Anka road.

The incidents illustrate the continuing challenges confronting security forces as they seek to protect civilian movement across vulnerable communities.

The insecurity has also disrupted local commerce in Gwashi and Bukkuyum, where repeated attacks have made routine journeys increasingly dangerous.

For traders, travelling to a weekly market is not simply a commercial activity but an important source of income for households and a means of maintaining the flow of goods between communities.

The reported ambush raises fresh questions about the protection available to civilians travelling under military escort.

Until the authorities establish what happened and release verified casualty figures, the full extent of Sunday’s attack will remain uncertain.
