The United States Department of Justice has charged two Nigerian nationals and 61 other foreign nationals with alleged illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration and making false claims of American citizenship in connection with federal elections.
The department announced the charges on Monday, November 2, 2026, as part of an ongoing crackdown on alleged election-related offences involving 63 individuals across the country.

The two Nigerians were identified as Mohammed Omar Hassan, 61, and Michael Agah, 74.
Both are lawful permanent residents of the United States.
According to a statement published on the Justice Department’s website, Hassan was charged in the Southern District of Texas with voting as a non-US citizen.
He allegedly voted in the 2022 and 2024 federal elections despite not being an American citizen.
Agah, on the other hand, was charged in the Western District of North Carolina with voting as a non-citizen and falsely claiming US citizenship to participate in an election.
The department alleged that Agah falsely declared himself an American citizen on an Authorization to Vote Form before voting in a federal election on November 5, 2024.
The latest charges come amid an intensified investigation into alleged voter fraud under President Donald Trump’s administration.
US Attorney General Todd Blanche described the development as the largest surge in voter-fraud arrests since Trump returned to office.
“Today’s announcement marks the largest surge of voter-fraud arrests since President Trump returned to office,” Blanche said.
He alleged that the foreign nationals had taken advantage of the trust of American voters and violated laws governing the country’s electoral process.
Blanche added that the Justice Department would continue investigating and prosecuting electoral offences to restore public confidence in the voting system.
The department disclosed that it had charged 195 non-US citizens across 25 states with illegal voting and voter registration offences in the preceding nine weeks.
This brought the total number of individuals charged with voting fraud-related offences since the beginning of the Trump administration to 239.
The latest development follows another round of charges announced less than two months earlier, involving three other Nigerians and 13 foreign nationals over alleged election-related offences.
The Nigerians identified in the September 19, 2026 announcement were Gladys Adaeze Okafor, 56; Helen Sayen Adams, 67; and Joshua Nmelichukwu Akpom, 27.
Okafor and Adams were accused of falsely claiming American citizenship to register and vote in elections, while Akpom was charged with making false statements in connection with his naturalisation application.
The Justice Department said the latest cases were being prosecuted across several federal judicial districts, including Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, California, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
It also listed nationals of Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, the Philippines, India, Colombia and the United Kingdom among those facing charges.

However, the department emphasised that the charges remain allegations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law.
