A 100-level female student of Plateau State University, Bokkos, has regained her freedom after her abductors abandoned her while fleeing an advancing security team during a rescue operation in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The student was kidnapped on Saturday night at an off-campus residential area within the university community, while another person sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
The Acting Public Relations Officer of the university, Masara Kim, confirmed the student’s recovery to journalists in Jos on Tuesday.
Kim explained that the university, in collaboration with a joint security team, launched an operation following the abduction, forcing the kidnappers to abandon their victim when they sighted the advancing security personnel.
“She was abandoned by her captors after the university, in collaboration with a joint security team, launched an operation that forced them to flee on sighting the advancing team,” he said.
He disclosed that the rescued student was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical examination and was receiving medical attention.
The university spokesperson added that the institution was working closely with security agencies to strengthen security and protect students and staff within and around the university community.
He also commended the security personnel for their prompt response, which led to the recovery of the abducted student.
The abduction occurred in an off-campus residential area in Bokkos, raising fresh concerns about the safety of students living outside the university premises.
A university staff member had earlier disclosed that the institution was aware of the shooting and abduction incidents, expressing concern over the security situation around student residential areas.
The staff member also explained that the university had made efforts to provide on-campus accommodation for students but was constrained by limited facilities.
According to the staff member, the university’s existing dormitories could accommodate only about 1,000 students, despite having a student population of nearly 20,000.
The university management said it would continue engaging relevant authorities to improve accommodation and security arrangements for students.
