The Democratic Party has won enough seats to regain control of the United States House of Representatives, according to a projection by CBS News following Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The projected victory would end four years of Republican control of the lower chamber of Congress and give Democrats greater influence over legislative activities and investigations into the administration of President Donald Trump.
CBS News reported that the Democrats secured enough victories in key congressional races to take back the House, although the final size of their majority remains unclear as vote counting continues in several competitive districts.
The Republicans had maintained control of the chamber since 2023, holding a narrow majority during the first half of Trump’s second term.
Before the election, the House had 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one independent who caucused with Republicans and two vacancies.
Democratic House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries, described the projected outcome as a significant moment for the party, saying the result marked the beginning of what he called a new chapter for the country.
“America is back,” Jeffries said, adding that Democrats understood the need to deliver significant changes following the election.
The victory is expected to reshape the relationship between the White House and Congress, as Democrats prepare to exercise greater oversight over the Trump administration.
According to CBS News, Democratic lawmakers are planning investigations into several issues involving the president and his administration once they assume control of the chamber in January.
The proposed investigations are expected to cover the president’s family business dealings, immigration enforcement policies, the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, presidential pardons and construction projects in Washington.
Democrats are also expected to use their control of congressional committees and federal spending processes to increase scrutiny of the administration.
On policy, Jeffries has identified the cost of living as a major priority for the party, alongside efforts to reverse certain healthcare spending cuts, extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credits and review the administration’s trade tariffs.
The election outcome represents a setback for Republicans, whose narrow majority had frequently made it difficult for party leaders to secure support for legislation without internal disagreements.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, said his party would not be discouraged by the election outcome.
He warned that making the next two years about political retaliation and partisan disputes would have consequences for Americans.
The Democratic takeover is expected to take effect when the new Congress is inaugurated in January 2027.
The result also places Jeffries in line to become Speaker of the House, potentially making him the first Black politician to occupy the position in American history, provided he secures the support of his party members.
The US midterm elections determine the composition of Congress halfway through a president’s four-year term and often influence the administration’s ability to advance its legislative agenda.
Although CBS News has projected a Democratic victory in the House, the final seat distribution will depend on the outcome of the remaining races.
