Liverpool suffer dramatic 3-2 defeat at Fenerbahce

Liverpool FC suffered their first defeat of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign after conceding three goals in a dramatic 3-2 loss to Fenerbahce at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

The defeat ended Liverpool’s winning start to the competition under head coach Andoni Iraola, with the English side twice taking the lead through Trey Nyoni and substitute Alexander Isak before Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi completed an impressive comeback for the Turkish hosts.

Fenerbahce, managed by former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt on an interim basis, secured their first victory of the league phase after collecting just two points from their opening three matches.

The encounter began positively for Liverpool, who created several early opportunities before Nyoni broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a strike from the edge of the penalty area.

The goal was a significant personal milestone for the 19-year-old midfielder, marking his first senior goal for Liverpool and making him the club’s second-youngest scorer in European Cup and Champions League history.

However, the visitors’ advantage lasted only four minutes. Greenwood restored parity in the 29th minute when his free-kick took a deflection off Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet, leaving goalkeeper Alisson Becker unable to prevent the ball from entering the net.

Both sides continued to threaten before the interval, but the first half ended with the score level at 1-1.

Liverpool returned from the break looking to regain control, creating opportunities through Bradley Barcola and Virgil van Dijk, but Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson produced important saves to keep the hosts in the contest.

Iraola introduced Isak, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz shortly after the hour mark in an attempt to strengthen Liverpool’s attacking threat.

The changes produced an immediate response when Gakpo delivered a cross that Isak converted with a close-range header in the 69th minute, restoring Liverpool’s lead at 2-1.

However, the visitors once again struggled to protect their advantage.

Fenerbahce equalised in the 73rd minute after a defensive mix-up involving Gakpo and Alisson allowed Brown to arrive unmarked at the far post and score from close range.

The Turkish side completed the turnaround six minutes later when Muriqi rose above Liverpool’s defenders to head home the winning goal in the 79th minute.

Liverpool pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages but could not find a way past the hosts’ defence, leaving Istanbul without a point.

Despite enjoying greater possession and creating more shooting opportunities, Liverpool were unable to translate their attacking superiority into a positive result.

Match statistics showed that Liverpool recorded 68 per cent possession and 22 shots, compared with Fenerbahce’s 32 per cent possession and 17 attempts.

Both sides registered six shots on target, highlighting the hosts’ efficiency in converting their opportunities.

The result also extended Liverpool’s worrying defensive record in the competition.

The Reds had conceded 10 goals across their first four Champions League league-phase matches, including three goals in each of their last three European outings.

According to Opta statistics reported by Opta Analyst, Nyoni, aged 19 years and 127 days, became Liverpool’s second-youngest scorer in European Cup and Champions League history, behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The defeat was also particularly significant for Kuyt, who spent six years at Liverpool as a player between 2006 and 2012. His second match in interim charge of Fenerbahce produced a notable victory against his former club.

Liverpool’s loss denied Iraola’s side the opportunity to move level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the 36-team league-phase standings.

Fenerbahce, meanwhile, moved up to 19th following their first victory of the campaign, giving the Turkish club renewed hope of progressing to the knockout stages.

The result leaves Liverpool with work to do in their remaining league-phase fixtures, particularly as their defensive vulnerabilities continue to undermine their attacking performances.

For Fenerbahce, the comeback represents an important boost in confidence and a statement victory against one of Europe’s established clubs.

The contrasting fortunes of both teams underline the competitiveness of this season’s Champions League, where even an early advantage offers little guarantee of victory.
