The Lagos State Government has urged spa and beauty business operators to strengthen hygiene, workplace safety and risk-control measures, warning that negligence could expose clients and employees to preventable injuries and health problems.

The Lagos State Safety Commission gave the warning during a one-day training programme for beauty industry practitioners themed, “Safe Hands, Safe Spaces: Building a Zero-Harm Culture in the Spa and Beauty Industry.”

The Director of Administration and Human Resources, Awolesi Ademola, who represented the commission’s Director-General, Lanre Mojola, said the programme was designed to help practitioners identify workplace hazards, assess operational risks and adopt preventive measures.

Ademola stressed that maintaining a safe business environment should go beyond meeting regulatory requirements, noting that risk prevention must become part of the daily responsibilities of both business owners and employees.

He urged operators to regard safety as an essential part of professional service delivery rather than an optional requirement.

Mojola also encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training to improve workplace practices, protect customers and provide safer working conditions for their employees.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to expanding safety awareness across different sectors of the Lagos economy to protect workers, business operators, residents and visitors.

The training focused on two major areas of occupational risk in the beauty industry: hazard identification in spa operations and the health implications of work-related strain among beauty professionals.

The Lagos State Chairman of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Olusola Ogunleye, delivered a presentation titled, “Beyond Beauty: Advanced Risk Assessment and Hazard Control in Spa Operations.”

He highlighted the importance of identifying potential hazards and implementing appropriate control measures to prevent workplace accidents.

Similarly, the Chief Medical Director of Skintetics Clinics, Chuka Imo, spoke on occupational health and ergonomic safety, outlining measures to protect beauty professionals from work-related health risks.

The Head of the commission’s Spa, Gym, Cinema, Parks and Gardens Unit, Abiola Mary Abiola, also urged participants to put the lessons from the programme into practice and maintain safer standards in their businesses.
