Former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has been named Pundit of the Year at the Broadcast Sport Awards in London, recognising his growing influence as a television football analyst following his transition from professional football and management into broadcasting.

Rooney, 41, received the award at a ceremony attended by about 650 people from the sports broadcasting industry on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The recognition follows his high-profile television appearances, particularly during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where his direct assessments, tactical observations and humorous contributions attracted attention from viewers.

One of his most talked-about moments came when he criticised the tournament’s final half-time show, featuring Madonna, BTS, Shakira and Justin Bieber.

Reacting to the 27-minute performance during a live BBC television broadcast, Rooney said: “I like a lot of them artists, but I thought it was crap.”

His unfiltered reaction surprised some viewers, including fellow pundit Joe Hart, but also reinforced the straightforward style that has become a feature of his television appearances.

Speaking after receiving the award, Rooney admitted that adapting to broadcasting had been more demanding than he initially anticipated.

“I didn’t realise how tough it was going to be when I first started doing it,” he said, acknowledging the effort required to develop his presentation and analytical skills.

The former striker added that he remained determined to improve despite the recognition.

“I’ve always been my own biggest critic. And even now I need to improve, I need to be better. It’s a lot of hard work,” he said.

Rooney’s move into broadcasting followed a distinguished playing career and spells in management with Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.

His full-time punditry debut on the BBC’s Match of the Day in August 2025 attracted mixed reactions, with some viewers questioning his television presentation.

However, Guardian journalist Paul MacInnes praised his contribution, describing him as articulate and tactically insightful.

The former England captain has also sought guidance from established broadcasters and former players, including Alan Shearer, Danny Murphy, Hart and Micah Richards, as he works to refine his delivery and analysis.

“I do look at the other pundits who have been there a long time. I see how they do it. I enjoy it, it keeps me involved in football,” Rooney said.

He acknowledged that negative reactions from viewers were sometimes difficult to avoid but insisted that criticism encouraged him to improve.

“It drives me to be better. I always feel when I do something I want to do better and be the best I can,” he added.

Rooney’s long-serving agent, Paul Stretford, praised his football intelligence and straightforward personality, saying the award reflected qualities he had demonstrated throughout his career.

“It is no surprise to me that Wayne has continued to put his doubters in their place with his football intelligence and straightforward manner,” Stretford said.

BBC Sport executives also commended his development. Philip Bernie, head of BBC Sport Events, described Rooney as a likeable team player, while BBC Sport Director Alex Kay-Jelski praised his intelligence, humour and willingness to learn.

Kay-Jelski also highlighted the on-screen chemistry between Rooney, Hart and Richards during the World Cup coverage, describing the three pundits as equal partners.

Their relationship attracted further attention after Rooney fulfilled a promise to undertake a rowing challenge following an incorrect prediction about a match involving Norway and Brazil.

After Norway defeated Brazil, he adapted the challenge and joined Hart and Richards on the Hudson River in New York.

Rooney’s Pundit of the Year award marks a significant milestone in his broadcasting career, reflecting his progress in a field he entered after years at the highest levels of professional football.
