Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that the cost of living in Nigeria remains cheaper than in the United States.
Oshiomhole made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he responded to complaints about the rising cost of living in the country.
“In Nigeria, N2,000 can get you something from mama put, but $1-something cannot buy you anything in the US,” he said.
The former Edo State governor described the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate as difficult but necessary measures to prevent the economy from collapsing.
According to him, Nigeria previously spent a significant portion of its revenue on fuel subsidies and debt servicing, leaving little money for development.
He said Tinubu demonstrated leadership by removing the subsidy on his first day in office in order to redirect funds towards infrastructure, education, healthcare and the student loan scheme.
Oshiomhole argued that while the President considers the interests of future generations, his critics are focused on short-term benefits.
He dismissed opposition claims that the reforms have worsened Nigerians’ economic conditions, urging citizens to remain patient as the benefits would become clearer with time.
