The Amotekun solidarity walk, which was scheduled to hold all over the south western region of Nigeria, was met with the disapproval of the federal security agencies, especially in Lagos.

Freelanews recalls on Thursday, January 9, 2020, Governors of Nigeria’s six southwest states of Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos, launched the western Nigeria security network called ‘Operation Amotekun’ in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo were present at the flag-off.

Governors Gboyega Oyetola of Osun, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun cited poor weather conditions as reason for their absence.

“Even though they are not physically here, I’m sure their spirits are here with us,” Makinde said of the absentee governors.

Operation Amotekun evolved due to the lack of security in the country and the attempt by the chief security officers of the South West to ensure their domains are secured.

The saying ‘all politics are local’ made the governors act to save their jobs. Security would play a great determinant in the next election, especially with the fact that Buhari can no longer contest, but five of the six governors are in their first term. Ofcourse, this is apart from Governor Kayode Fayemi, who is in his second term.

The fear of losing reelection pushed the other five governors to act, despite the fact that four out of them are members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The rally didn’t hold as expected as security agents were drafted to the venue of the rally to prevent any gathering whatsoever.
