A popular veteran journalist, Moji Danisa, had faulted a controversial televangelist over his reaction to the Nigerian vice president’s stance on tax for churches.
Recall that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had urged religious leaders to pay their ‘Pentecostal tax,’ which will tell their stories, achievements and life experiences in the ministry to affect generations.
This has led to a sharp reaction from Pastor David Ibiyeomie, a televangelist and founder of The Salvation Ministries, who called the vice president a disappointment.
In her reaction, Queen of Tabloid Journalism, as she is fondly called, Danisa wondered the basis of Pastor Ibiyeomie’s counter of Prof. Yemi Osibanjo’s claim.
“What doesn’t make sense is why the anger?” she said, “If you can hound us down with 10% of our hard earned money, it’s only fair to give part of it to the government, after all, you are all in the business of exploiting people.”
She continued, “I have always said churches should be taxed. It’s a business which will lose appeal to those who are not truly ‘called’ (whatever that means) when properly taxed.
“As at now, these houses called churches are huge commercial centers. Tax them! Tax them heavily! We will have less stupid people in the society when we have less fake pastors!”
