A lot of people have been engaging me on some of the possibilities in 2023, but I’d refrained from doing a serious discussion with anyone, deliberately. However, yesterday, a prominent Nigerian put me on the spot and I shared five things I’m almost certain could happen in 2023.
- Tinubu is not likely to run for the presidency. Take that to the bank. Like IBB, Tinubu is a risk taker but wouldn’t personally take a plunge, where the odds are stacked against him. Ignore the frenzy from the support groups. I have a strong feeling he wouldn’t run, but he’d have a HUGE say in who emerges – North or South. That’s the basis for the prevalent noise without a clear cut direction.
Nothing is going to be cast in stone about where the next president will come from. Nigerians should brace up for that reality. Yes, the South wants it as much as the North is unwilling to yield power. Sadly, the feeling is mutual in both parties. So, don’t beat your chest yet. Where it would end up eventually will be contingent on which region negotiates better.
This may sound odd but it is a high possibility. A Muslim-Muslim ticket is back on the card. You may have to file this away and put it on your left hand for keeps. Indeed, this possibility is being pondered more in the ruling party. Although a delicate gambit, somewhat, it appears to have its positive slant.
A Government of National Unity is also likely in 2023. Things are so bad now that the players in the two major parties are looking in this direction. To ease some of the tensions located in some of the possibilities earlier espoused, it’s an idea that could fly in the next dispensation. Both parties are willing.
It’s most given that the 2023 election may turn out the cleanest, fairest and one with the most credibility in the nation’s history. This is, however, feasible with the use technology by INEC. It will also be an improvement on the nation’s electoral process, overall.
Now, for emphasis, these are my personal readings of the polity and marked for consideration by some of the privileged behind-the-scenes happenings. They’re still fluid and might still bend to new thinking with time, as the nation journeys through 2023.
