In commemoration of Energy Conservation Month the Governor of Lagos State in Nigeria, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), will formally switch on the 8.8MW Mainland Independent Power Plant on 31 October.

According to a statement issued in Lagos by the General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board, Damilola Ogunbiyi, the government is committed to its holistic plan to meet the power needs of Lagos.

‘The power needs of Lagos, Nigeria’s industrial and commercial nerve centre and one of the world’s fastest growing megacities is huge. To this end, the Lagos State Government has launched several initiatives to meet the power needs of its people across domestic, industrial and commercial spheres,’ stated Ogunbiyi.

She explained that part of the steps taken so far by the administration include the implementation of a strategic energy development plan which entails the creation of a fully-fledged Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Lagos State Electricity Board. The initiatives include the launch of Independent Power Projects and the dedication of October as the Energy Conservation Month which debuted in 2013.

The six Independents Power Plants (IPPs) in Lagos State will deliver a combined capacity of 47MW of electricity before the first quarter of next year, comprising of:

  • 12.55 MW Akute Independent Power Plant
  • 10MW Lagos Island 1&2 Independent Power Plant
  • 10.4MW Alausa Independent Power Plant
  • 8.8MW Mainland Independent Power Plant
  • 6MW Lekki Peninsula Integrated Power Project

Ogunbiyi clarified the intent of Lagos State Electricity Board for introducing The Energy Conservation Month stating that, ‘It is essentially a Behavioural Change Campaign dubbed as “Conserve Energy, Save Money” (CESM) and aimed at promoting the practice of efficient use of available electric power.’

Public and private sector benefit from 24-hour uninterrupted supply

The Power Plant located at the Government Reservation Area Ikeja will ensure 24-hour uninterrupted supply to a number of public institutions including:

  • Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)
  • Ikeja High Court Complex
  • Old Secretariat Complex
  • Ikeja Water Works

The power plant will also guarantee over 20km of public Lighting to select streets around Ikeja.
