Ibadan elder infidelity advice

A Yoruba elder’s unconventional advice on a radio show in Ibadan, suggesting a unique form of revenge for infidelity, has gone viral, sparking humorous reactions and cultural debate

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] radio interview on Ibadan’s Agidigbo 88.7 FM has ignited a social media firestorm, thanks to some rather unconventional advice from an elderly guest.

The show, “Kokoro Alate,” hosted by prominent journalist and activist Oriyomi Hamzat, featured a Yoruba elder offering his perspective on a local infidelity case.

The story, as presented on the show and picked up by X user @oyoaffairs, involved the owner of an Emirate filling station who was reportedly betrayed by his wife, who had an affair with their gateman.

The enraged husband threatened to take drastic action against the gateman, prompting him to seek counsel from the elder.

The elder’s advice took a decidedly different turn.

He suggested, in essence, an eye for an eye, but with a twist: “Don’t kill the gateman,” he reportedly advised, “sleep with his wife’s sister, aunt, and all her friends instead.”

This caused reactions online.

The following are some of them:

X user @IamGeeworld exclaimed, “Baba Ogba re oooo. Even Oriyomi Hamzat was shocked!” while @dammygtnet commented, “See mentality. 100k Lack of exposure.”

Some users expressed concern about the potential legal ramifications of the elder’s suggestion, with @TheYemiKing stating, “The man revealed a lot. I hope he won’t use the rest of his life in prison.”

@bumse13 requesting, “Please we need link to full video,” and others attributing the incident to “awon ara Ibadan pelu dido” (a humorous reference to certain perceived traits of Ibadan people).

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about cultural attitudes towards infidelity, revenge, and societal expectations in Nigeria.

The elder’s perspective, while shocking to many, reflects some traditional beliefs about justice and retribution, particularly in cases involving perceived betrayal.
