Alaafin cancels Brazilian’s Oyo chieftaincy title

Oba Abimbola Owoade declares Paola Almeida Ferreira’s title void, citing lack of palace approval

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has cancelled the chieftaincy title of Yeye Atayese Oniyemoja of Oyo land reportedly conferred on Brazilian national Paola Almeida Ferreira by Yemoja worshippers, declaring the title null and void because the approval of the Oyo palace was not obtained.

The development places the authority of the traditional institution at the centre of another debate over the conferment of honorary titles in Oyo, where the Alaafin has previously asserted the palace’s authority over chieftaincy titles connected to the wider Yoruba cultural space. (Matrix NGR)

The title bestowed on Ferreira was reportedly associated with Yemoja worship and her involvement in Yoruba cultural and spiritual activities.

However, Oba Owoade’s latest position makes clear that such a title cannot stand without the formal consent of the palace.

The Alaafin’s decision is particularly significant given his earlier pronouncements on the authority of the Oyo throne to approve titles carrying wider cultural significance.

In December 2025, the monarch stated that the Oyo throne had exclusive authority to confer chieftaincy titles bearing the designation “Yorubaland”. (Matrix NGR)

The latest reversal therefore reinforces the monarch’s broader insistence that activities involving the traditional institution must be properly authorised before they are presented publicly as official palace initiatives.

Oba Owoade became the 46th Alaafin of Oyo after his appointment was approved by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in January 2025.

He was formally crowned on April 5, 2025, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who died in April 2022. (Channels Television)

Since assuming the throne, Oba Owoade has taken steps to define the institutional authority of the palace, including insisting that initiatives involving the Alaafin’s office receive prior approval.

In an earlier palace directive concerning an unauthorised coronation committee, the monarch’s office warned that activities organised without the Alaafin’s consent would be regarded as unauthorised. (Punch Newspapers)

That position has now resurfaced in the dispute over Ferreira’s title.

The episode also highlights the increasingly global reach of Yoruba culture, with international visitors and practitioners taking a growing interest in Yemoja worship and other elements of Yoruba traditional spirituality.

For the palace, however, cultural participation and the formal conferment of a traditional title are separate matters.

The recognition of an individual as a chief carries institutional implications that extend beyond participation in cultural or religious activities.

The cancellation is therefore less about Ferreira’s nationality than about the authority through which the title was created.

For supporters of the traditional institution, the palace’s intervention underscores the importance of preserving established protocols surrounding chieftaincy.

For those involved in Yoruba cultural activities outside the formal palace structure, it is a reminder that honorary recognition does not necessarily amount to a recognised traditional title.

Oba Owoade’s position also comes against the backdrop of continuing efforts by the Alaafin to clarify the place of the Oyo throne within the traditional hierarchy of Yorubaland.

His interventions have occasionally generated debate over the boundaries of authority among Yoruba monarchs. (Matrix NGR)

The latest decision is expected to renew attention on the procedures governing chieftaincy titles in Oyo and the extent to which cultural organisations and worshippers can independently confer titles associated with the kingdom.

For Ferreira, the title may have represented a meaningful connection to Yoruba culture and Yemoja worship.

But without the approval of the Alaafin’s palace, Oba Owoade has made clear that the recognition will not be accepted as an official title of Oyo.

The palace’s intervention ultimately sends a powerful message about the weight attached to traditional authority in Oyo: cultural honour may be widely celebrated, but formal chieftaincy remains subject to the institution empowered to confer it.
