A coalition of Christian and human rights groups led by the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN) has petitioned United States President Donald Trump, members of the US Congress and foreign diplomatic missions over concerns surrounding the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
The petition, released in Jos, Plateau State, on 3 August 2026, focused on the reported possibility of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima continuing on a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the next election cycle.

CYAN said the arrangement had raised concerns among some Christian communities, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where the group argued that insecurity and questions around political inclusion remained sensitive issues.
The coalition’s leaders said Nigeria had historically maintained a balance of religious representation in national leadership by pairing presidential and vice-presidential candidates from different faith backgrounds.
The APC’s decision in the 2023 presidential election to field two Muslim candidates, Tinubu from the South-West and Shettima from the North-East, departed from that informal political tradition and triggered debate among religious and political groups across the country.
In its petition, CYAN urged international stakeholders to continue monitoring Nigeria’s security situation and called for greater attention to attacks affecting communities in states including Plateau and Benue.
The group also criticised the Federal Government’s policy of rehabilitating and reintegrating repentant terrorists, arguing that individuals involved in violent crimes should face prosecution.
“The government must ensure that victims of terrorism and violent attacks receive justice while perpetrators are held accountable,” the coalition said in its statement.
CYAN further called for Nigeria to remain under international scrutiny until there was what it described as clear and independently verified improvement in the protection of vulnerable communities.
The group requested transparent investigations into attacks on Christian communities and continued humanitarian support for people displaced by insecurity.
The petition also included allegations of foreign influence in Nigeria’s political affairs, with CYAN calling for investigations into claims that external actors may be attempting to influence the country’s electoral process. The allegations have not been independently verified.
The debate over the APC Muslim ticket comes as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The ruling party has not formally announced its final presidential and vice-presidential arrangement for the election.
Supporters of the current APC leadership have previously defended the 2023 ticket, arguing that competence, national unity and electoral considerations should guide political choices rather than religious identity alone.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has a diverse religious landscape, with Christianity and Islam representing the two largest faith communities.
Political analysts have often noted that religious balance remains an important factor in election campaigns, especially when candidates seek support across the country’s regions.

As preparations for 2027 continue, discussions around representation, security, governance and national cohesion are expected to remain central issues in Nigeria’s political conversation.
