ASUU president Piwuna praises Tinubu in controversial remark

ASUU President Piwuna praises Tinubu in a viral video, triggering sharp reactions and debate over leadership and public discourse

Professor Chris Piwuna, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has publicly praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as Nigeria’s best president in a video that has gone viral online.

Professor Piwuna made the statement while addressing an audience, asserting that anyone who disputes President Tinubu’s performance should be referred to a psychiatric hospital.

The remark quickly gained traction across social media platforms.

The comment triggered swift and divided reactions from Nigerians, with supporters applauding what they described as a fearless endorsement of the president’s leadership.

Critics questioned the language used and warned against rhetoric that could deepen political polarisation.

Professor Piwuna, who leads Nigeria’s most influential academic union, did not provide further clarification after the video circulated widely.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has often engaged the Federal Government on funding, welfare, and university reforms.

President Tinubu’s administration has pursued sweeping economic and institutional reforms since assuming office, drawing both praise and sharp criticism from different sectors.

The viral statement has intensified public discussion about leadership assessment, freedom of expression, and the role of prominent union leaders in national political discourse.
