Atiku, Obi alliance could weaken APC in 2027 polls

Atiku and Obi alliance could weaken APC in 2027 as Dominic Alancha warns a joint ticket may pull up to 14 million votes against the ruling party

Atiku and Obi alliance may significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain has warned.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Dominic Alancha, who also leads the Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum, cautioned that a joint ticket between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi could seriously dent the APC’s chances.

“In 2027, the dynamics may change. If Peter Obi and Atiku align and present a united front, they could easily pull 13 to 14 million votes. That would seriously impact our chances,” Alancha stated.

The warning comes after key opposition figures — Atiku, Obi, former Senate President David Mark, ex-ministers Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai — adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on July 2, 2025, as their coalition platform.

Alancha further urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider retaining the Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2027, stressing that it could reduce the APC’s national appeal.

“If the Muslim-Muslim ticket is retained, it’s going to pose a threat and deplete our support base,” he warned.

According to him, the opposition coalition is “not sleeping” and may leverage unity to secure almost 14 million votes, compared to the APC’s 8 million votes in 2023.

The Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum had earlier advised Tinubu against repeating the 2023 formula, noting it alienated northern Christians and limited the party’s electoral strength.

For Alancha, the message is clear: the Atiku and Obi alliance could be a game-changer if APC fails to adjust its strategy ahead of the 2027 battle for Aso Rock.
