Bishop Matthew Kukah urges President Bola Tinubu to tackle Nigeria’s growing food crisis and reduce fuel costs during an APC event in Abuja.

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to urgently address the escalating food crisis in Nigeria.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) unveiling of the Progressive Institute in Abuja on Friday, Kukah emphasised the hunger experienced by many Nigerians, urging prompt action.

He further highlighted the need to reduce the rising cost of fuel, which has seen the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) increase from around N585 per litre to nearly N900. This surge has sparked significant public outrage, with many calling for a reversal.

The event, attended by governors, ministers, party leaders, and other government officials, also featured the presence of Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, as well as representatives of Vice President Kashim Shettima and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Nigeria is currently experiencing one of the worst food crises in its history, with food inflation surpassing 40 per cent according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Kukah reiterated the need for a strong intellectual foundation for democracy, cautioning that without it, democracy would be “built on sand.”

He urged for politics to be viewed as a science that delivers good governance, rather than a mere game of looting, and expressed the Kukah Centre’s commitment to promoting quality leadership.

APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, also spoke at the event, explaining that the Progressive Institute is designed to institutionalise the party’s ideology and serve as a platform for inclusive dialogue.

Ganduje added that the institute will provide policy advice and act as a think-tank for the APC government at both national and state levels. He also noted its role in engaging the international community on key policy matters.
