The captain’s hat-trick inspires a dramatic comeback at Old Trafford as Michael Carrick’s side recover from their opening-day defeat to Hull City

Bruno Fernandes produced a magnificent captain’s performance at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30, 2026, scoring a hat-trick and supplying an assist as Michael Carrick’s Manchester United recovered from an early deficit to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 in the Premier League.

The victory gave Manchester United their first points of the 2026/27 campaign and offered a powerful response to last weekend’s disappointing 2-0 defeat by newly promoted Hull City. (The Guardian)

For much of the opening half, however, United looked capable of suffering another uncomfortable afternoon against a promoted side.

Ipswich created the clearer chances early on, with Senne Lammens forced into a one-on-one save from Julio Enciso before the visitors took the lead in the 29th minute.

Abdul Fatawu raced beyond Luke Shaw and delivered a dangerous cross which Leif Davis swept high into the net, giving Ipswich a deserved advantage.

Davis soon had an opportunity to double the lead, but Lammens kept United alive with another important save.

The turning point arrived shortly before half-time when Ipswich midfielder Marcelino Núñez slipped and surrendered possession to Matheus Cunha.

Cunha quickly found Fernandes, who made no mistake with a fierce left-foot finish to restore parity in the 40th minute. (Sky Sports)

That goal changed the mood inside Old Trafford.

United emerged after the interval with greater urgency and turned the match decisively in a remarkable 12-minute spell.

Harry Maguire’s effort deflected into the Ipswich goal off Jacob Greaves in the 56th minute to put United ahead.

There was brief controversy over a possible handball by Maguire before the own goal, but the goal stood after VAR review because the accidental contact did not directly result in Maguire scoring. (Talksport)

Greaves then compounded Ipswich’s problems by bringing down Cunha inside the area.

Fernandes stepped forward and calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 61st minute, giving United a 3-1 lead.

The Portuguese midfielder completed his hat-trick seven minutes later, finishing from close range to cap an outstanding individual display. (Sky Sports)

Fernandes’ performance was particularly significant coming days after he was recognised by his fellow professionals as last season’s player of the year.

His influence last season was built heavily on his creativity, with 21 Premier League assists, while his nine goals showed the balance between creating opportunities and finishing them.

Against Ipswich, he supplied both qualities again.

Fernandes turned provider in the 82nd minute when he sent Bryan Mbeumo through with a precise pass over the top. Mbeumo lifted the ball over Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen to make it 5-1. (RTE)

The afternoon also marked an encouraging return to the Manchester United starting XI for Marcus Rashford, who made his first start for the club in almost two years.

Kobbie Mainoo also returned to the team, and their inclusion gave Carrick’s side greater energy and attacking intent compared with the performance at Hull.

Yet the emphatic scoreline did not completely disguise United’s defensive vulnerabilities.

Ipswich remained capable of exploiting space behind the home defence, while a late mistake from Lisandro Martínez allowed Julio Enciso to set up Chuba Akpom for a simple stoppage-time finish.

The goal reduced the deficit to 5-2 but could not alter the outcome.

Carrick will therefore leave Old Trafford with both encouragement and areas requiring attention.

Going forward, United looked far more dangerous, particularly once Fernandes took control of the contest. At the back, however, the same fragility that contributed to the defeat at Hull was visible again.

For Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil, the defeat will be difficult to digest after his side competed strongly during the opening stages and briefly threatened to compound United’s difficult start.

Instead, Fernandes’ brilliance turned the contest on its head.

The victory provides Carrick with valuable breathing space after last weekend’s setback and gives United a platform from which to build their campaign.

More importantly, the performance reaffirmed the influence of their captain. When United needed inspiration, Fernandes supplied it in abundance, producing three goals and an assist to transform a worrying afternoon into an emphatic first victory of the season.
