Former worship pastor Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, following a trial that examined his affair with another woman and messages prosecutors said pointed to plans to kill his wife.
Flynn, 40, was convicted in September 2026 of aggravated murder and other offences over the February 16 killing of Ashley, 37, at their home in Tipp City, Ohio, in the United States. He received the life sentence on October 5.
Prosecutors said Flynn shot Ashley while she was asleep and subsequently attempted to make the incident appear to be a burglary. The couple’s two daughters were at home when the killing occurred but were not physically harmed.
Flynn initially reported a shooting and claimed an intruder was responsible. Investigators later raised questions about his account, and prosecutors presented digital and forensic evidence to support their case.
A major part of the trial centred on Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner, a woman who had worked as an intern at his church. Botner testified that their relationship lasted about 18 months and that they exchanged more than 100,000 text messages.
Prosecutors presented messages in which Flynn allegedly discussed ways to kill Ashley without going to prison. Other messages showed the pair discussing their relationship and Flynn’s intention to leave his wife.
In one exchange, Botner reportedly gave Flynn an ultimatum, saying she would leave until Ashley was gone. During her testimony, however, Botner said she had meant that Flynn should divorce his wife. She also testified that she became suspicious after learning Ashley had been killed, given the messages about Flynn leaving his marriage.
The prosecution also presented evidence that Flynn allegedly tried to stage the home to support his claim that an intruder had entered. The firearm used in the killing was not recovered, but prosecutors relied on other evidence, including electronic records, to build their case.
Flynn did not testify at trial, and the defence challenged the prosecution’s case, arguing that investigators had moved too quickly to accuse him. He maintained his innocence despite the jury’s verdict.
At sentencing, Flynn apologised to Ashley’s family and their daughters for his lies and hateful comments about his wife, but continued to deny killing her. In addition to the life sentence, he received further penalties relating to evidence tampering and firearm offences. Reports said he intended to appeal the conviction.
Ashley was a schoolteacher and volleyball coach. Her death left the couple’s two daughters without their mother and brought intense attention to the case, particularly the messages presented in court and the contrast between Flynn’s role as a church worship leader and the allegations established against him at trial.
