Cameroon shock Nigeria to end WAFCON title defence

thenacre-campaign

Cameroon ended Nigeria’s reign as African champions on Sunday, 9 August 2026, with a hard-fought 1-0 quarter-final victory in Casablanca, Morocco, sending the Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals and securing their place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Myriam Maéva Nyadjou scored the decisive goal in the 19th minute, producing a powerful long-range effort that flew into the top corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The result means a new champion will be crowned in Morocco after Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the continental title came to an abrupt end.

Cameroon entered the quarter-final as Group D winners, while Nigeria arrived as defending champions and one of the tournament’s leading contenders. CAF had identified the meeting as one of the most significant quarter-finals of the competition.

Nyadjou’s strike gave Cameroon an early advantage, but Nigeria responded with sustained pressure.

Rasheedat Ajibade attempted to create an immediate opening when she sent a dangerous delivery into the area, although Gift Monday could not make clean contact.

Nigeria came closer in the 28th minute when Rinsola Babajide’s delivery found Jennifer Echegini, but Cameroon’s defence survived another threatening moment.

The Indomitable Lionesses entered half-time with their narrow lead intact.

Nigeria returned after the break with greater urgency, searching for the equaliser that would have taken the tie into extra time.

Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, however, produced a decisive performance. Her most important intervention came in the 70th minute when she stretched to deny Uchenna Kanu’s powerful header.

Nigeria continued to push forward as the clock ran down, while Cameroon looked increasingly dangerous on the counter.

Cameroon goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was then called into action in the closing stages, tipping Achta Njoya’s well-struck free-kick over the bar.

Esther Okoronkwo came close to rescuing Nigeria late in the contest after beating her marker, but her left-footed attempt drifted narrowly wide with Asisat Oshoala available alongside her.

Cameroon held on through the final minutes to complete a memorable victory over the 10-time African champions.

The result also has major implications beyond the continental championship. By reaching the semi-finals, Cameroon secured one of Africa’s direct places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The top four teams at the WAFCON will qualify automatically.

Nigeria, meanwhile, have lost their direct qualification opportunity but remain alive in the World Cup race.

The Super Falcons are due to face South Africa in a play-in match, with the winners advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs for another opportunity to reach the tournament in Brazil.

The defeat also ends a significant chapter in Nigeria’s recent history at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria entered the 2026 tournament as the reigning champions after winning their record 10th continental title in the previous edition. Their elimination means the competition will have a new winner this year.

South Africa, the 2022 champions, had already been knocked out by hosts Morocco in the quarter-finals, further opening the field for a new champion.

For Cameroon, the victory represents a powerful statement from a side that remained composed against one of Africa’s most decorated women’s teams.

For Nigeria, the immediate priority is now different. The Super Falcons must recover quickly from the disappointment and focus on the play-in route if they are to maintain their presence at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Cameroon’s reward is a place among the final four and a ticket to Brazil.

Nigeria’s title defence, meanwhile, is over.
