Comfort Emmanson speaks out after her clash with Ibom Air staff led to arrest, public backlash, and the release of a viral video showing her in distress
Comfort Emmanson, the passenger at the center of a viral in-flight altercation involving Ibom Air staff, has spoken out for the first time since the incident, revealing a deeply emotional account of what transpired on board and in the aftermath.

In a detailed video posted to Instagram, Emmanson—who works in real estate—recounted the moment a routine flight from Uyo to Lagos on August 10 escalated into what she describes as trauma, humiliation, and physical assault.
“I told her, please, can you assist me and spell general? She said she cannot touch my phone,” Emmanson said, referring to a flight attendant she identified as Juliana Edwards.
According to Emmanson, the disagreement began during pre-flight instructions when she struggled to switch off a faulty phone.
Unable to navigate her settings, she asked for help spelling the word “General,” only to be dismissed by the flight attendant.
With assistance from a fellow passenger, the phones were eventually turned off, but Emmanson claims the attendant issued a subtle threat: “You will see.”
Later, after landing in Lagos and briefly using the onboard toilet, Emmanson said she attempted to disembark but was blocked by the same attendant.
“She didn’t say a word—just stood there and refused to let me pass. That’s when I started recording, and everything escalated,” she explained.
The now-viral footage captured part of the altercation. Emmanson alleges that after noticing she was being recorded, the attendant pushed her, tore off her frontal wig, broke her gold chain, and caused her phone to fall and shatter.
“That pain is what triggered my reaction. I was angry, not violent. I poked her because of how much she hurt me, not because I’m a violent person.”
She further stated that during the struggle, security operatives entered the aircraft, forcibly removed her, and in the process, her clothes were torn—leaving her partially exposed.
“My body was out there. I was trying to cover myself while people recorded me. That video is now everywhere, even turned into a sticker. How do I show my face at work?”
The Comfort Emmanson ordeal quickly became national news, with mixed public reactions.
Following her arrest and detention at Kirikiri Correctional Centre, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, intervened, asking Ibom Air to withdraw its complaint—leading to her release.
Emmanson says the experience has left her deeply traumatised and socially isolated.
“I’ve flown with Ibom Air for years without any problems. This one experience has destroyed so much. I can’t even go to work without thinking everyone has seen that video.”
Despite the emotional toll, she expressed appreciation for the Nigerians who showed her compassion during the incident.
