COSEYL electoral defence tour aims to protect votes and promote transparency ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections

The Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), led by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, has announced plans to embark on a comprehensive electoral sensitisation and democratic defence tour across the South-East geopolitical zone ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Goodluck Ibem disclosed the initiative on Tuesday, stating that the COSEYL electoral defence tour is driven by a commitment to protecting democracy, preserving the sanctity of the ballot, and upholding citizens’ fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He emphasised that the move is rooted in constitutional provisions, citing Section 14(2)(c), which guarantees citizens’ participation in governance, and Section 1(2), which mandates that the country must be governed strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Ibem warned that any attempt to manipulate electoral outcomes would constitute a direct violation of the Constitution and a betrayal of Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

He described electoral malpractice, including rigging and undue interference, as illegal and unacceptable.

The COSEYL electoral defence tour, according to him, will focus on mobilising, educating and empowering citizens across the South-East to lawfully defend their votes, resist electoral fraud and demand accountability throughout the electoral process.

In a strong and unequivocal message, the group cautioned individuals or institutions contemplating electoral malpractice in the region to desist, insisting that the will of the people “is not negotiable and will not be compromised”.

The organisation also urged security agencies to adhere strictly to their constitutional roles, stressing that under Section 215 and other relevant laws, their duty is to maintain law and order rather than facilitate any form of illegality.

Analysts note that the planned tour reflects growing civic engagement in the region as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace, with increased calls for transparency and credible electoral processes.
