Daniel Regha Alex Otti criticism trends online after the commentator questioned the naming of a bus terminal after an electoral official

Social commentator Daniel Regha has criticised Abia State Governor Alex Otti and supporters of the Obidient movement over the decision to name the Umuahia bus terminal after an electoral official linked to the 2023 governorship election.

Regha, in a strongly worded reaction posted on social media on Thursday, accused critics of double standards and selective outrage, arguing that a similar gesture by President Bola Tinubu or the ruling All Progressives Congress would have triggered nationwide condemnation.

The commentator referenced former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu while drawing comparisons between the current controversy and previous political naming practices across the country.

“Imagine if Tinubu names a mega project or building after Mahmood Yakubu for a successful 2023 election; there will be outrage, but since it’s Alex Otti, and not an APC member, silence,” Regha wrote.

The Daniel Regha Alex Otti criticism quickly gained traction online, sparking heated debate among political supporters and critics across multiple social media platforms.

Regha questioned the rationale behind naming a public project after an electoral official who merely performed statutory responsibilities during the election process.

The social commentator also argued that the timing of the decision, coming as political activities gradually intensify ahead of future elections, could deepen public suspicion about neutrality within Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“So what’s the difference between Alex naming the Umuahia bus terminal after a returning officer who announced his victory, and politicians renaming projects after Tinubu and Buhari?” Regha added.

Supporters of Governor Otti, however, defended the move, insisting that state governments reserve the right to honour individuals they consider deserving of recognition for contributions to governance or public service.

Some political observers said the controversy reflects broader concerns about symbolism in Nigerian politics, particularly regarding electoral officials and public trust in democratic processes.

Others argued that public perception remains highly sensitive following the disputed outcomes and political tensions that surrounded the 2023 general elections.

The debate has continued to dominate online conversations, with rival political camps accusing one another of hypocrisy, bias and inconsistent standards regarding public honours and political recognition.

The Daniel Regha Alex Otti criticism has also reignited discussions about whether public infrastructure should be named after political actors, electoral figures or individuals connected to controversial moments in Nigeria’s democratic history.
