Dennis Locorriere, the celebrated lead vocalist of 1970s rock band Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, has died aged 76 following a long battle with kidney disease.

His management confirmed that Locorriere died peacefully on May 16, 2026, surrounded by loved ones after what was described as a courageous struggle with illness.

In a statement released on Sunday, his representatives said the veteran musician faced his condition with “remarkable strength, dignity, and resilience” throughout his final years.

“Dennis faced his illness with remarkable strength, dignity, and resilience throughout, and remained deeply cherished by all who knew him,” the statement read.

“He will be remembered for his warmth, love, and the lasting impact he had on those around him.”

The announcement prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, broadcasters and fellow musicians honouring a performer widely recognised for his distinctive voice and enduring stage presence.

Dennis Locorriere dies after a music career spanning nearly six decades, during which he became best known for hit songs including “When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman”, “Sylvia’s Mother” and “Sharing The Night Together”.

Locorriere performed alongside Ray Sawyer, who died in 2019, during the band’s commercial peak in the 1970s when the group was originally known as Dr Hook & The Medicine Show.

Born in Union City, Locorriere later settled in the United Kingdom, where he lived for more than two decades before his death.

He co-founded the band with Sawyer, Billy Francis and George Cummings before later pursuing a successful solo career.

Beyond performing, Locorriere also built a respected reputation as a songwriter, with his compositions recorded by artists including Bob Dylan, Olivia Newton-John and Willie Nelson.

In 2014, more than four decades after the band’s debut success, Dr Hook returned to the UK charts with the album Timeless, which reached number 11.

The collection featured 40 tracks combining love songs, chart hits and lesser-known recordings from the group’s catalogue.
