EFCC arrests Nigerian-American in $320,000 car fraud

EFCC has arrested Nigerian-American Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams for allegedly defrauding victims of $320,000 in a cross-border vehicle import scam involving a fake 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Nigerian-American dual citizen Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams for an alleged $320,000 vehicle import fraud.

The arrest was made by the EFCC Ilorin Zonal Directorate after Adams returned to Nigeria. He is being investigated for criminal breach of trust and obtaining money by false pretence.

According to preliminary findings, Adams, who resides in the United States, allegedly belonged to a syndicate that targeted Nigerians by advertising luxury vehicles for purchase and shipment.

He reportedly circulated photographs of a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG and convinced two victims to pay a combined total of $320,000 (approximately ₦434.88 million).

One victim, Ikechukwu Osita Ifeabunike, allegedly paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while Godson Azubuike Amans reportedly paid $175,000 for the same vehicle that was never delivered.

Investigations also revealed that Adams has a prior criminal record in the United States linked to illegal vehicle acquisition.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

This case highlights the growing number of cross-border vehicle scams targeting Nigerians eager to import luxury cars from the United States.

Many victims lose substantial sums after being shown convincing photographs and documents of vehicles that never materialise.

EFCC has warned the public to exercise caution when dealing with overseas car dealers and to verify the authenticity of agents before making payments.
