Ahmed Sanusi disclosed the development on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasising that the FCT police humane custody approach reflects a broader commitment to upholding human rights within the justice system.
The commissioner said suspects in custody should be treated with dignity, noting that arrest does not equate to guilt.
Ahmed Sanusi explained that improved conditions in detention centres are intended to reflect professionalism and respect for the rule of law.
“Even my cells have air conditioners,” Ahmed Sanusi said, adding that efforts are ongoing to further enhance the welfare of detainees.
He maintained that individuals remain innocent until proven guilty by a court of law and should therefore receive fair and respectful treatment while in custody.
Ahmed Sanusi also suggested that humane engagement with suspects could improve public perception of the police, describing it as a progressive shift in policing culture aimed at building trust and cooperation with citizens.
In a separate development, the commissioner issued a strong warning to individuals involved in manhole vandalism across the Federal Capital Territory.
Ahmed Sanusi said offenders would be treated as economic saboteurs rather than ordinary thieves.
He further disclosed that security agencies would intensify efforts to track both perpetrators and buyers of stolen materials, alongside increasing night patrols to curb criminal activity in Abuja.
