FIFA, world football’s governing body, has launched a formal disciplinary investigation into the Argentina national team after chaotic scenes erupted following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The investigation follows a series of confrontations involving Argentina players and coaching staff moments after Ferran Torres’ decisive extra-time goal secured Spain’s second men’s World Cup title.

FIFA confirmed that its Disciplinary Committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the incidents and determine whether the FIFA Disciplinary Code was breached.

The governing body said the prosecutor will review the referee’s report, match footage and other available evidence before recommending whether sanctions should be imposed on individual players, members of the coaching staff or the Argentine Football Association. No timeline has been given for the conclusion of the investigation.

The altercation unfolded seconds after the final whistle as Spain’s players celebrated their triumph.

Television footage appeared to show Argentina defender Nahuel Molina confronting Spain midfielder Rodri, with Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala also becoming involved as the situation escalated into a broader melee.

FIFA later clarified that although reports initially suggested Paredes had been sent off after the match, no disciplinary action was recorded against the midfielder during the game itself.

Argentina had already been reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in stoppage time.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, who was seen attempting to calm the confrontation, insisted after the match that his side accepted defeat despite the ugly scenes.

“We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat,” Scaloni said. “We lost the match, and we accept it, but that doesn’t mean we stop living or forget everything we did to get here.”

The latest disciplinary case adds to Argentina’s growing scrutiny during the tournament.

FIFA is already reviewing the national team’s conduct after players displayed a banner supporting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands following their semi-final victory against England, an act that could also breach regulations prohibiting political messages during FIFA competitions.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary rules, offences involving violent conduct, unsporting behaviour or actions that bring football into disrepute can result in player suspensions, fines or sanctions against national associations.

The appointment of a disciplinary prosecutor suggests FIFA intends to conduct a detailed assessment before deciding on any punishment.

The investigation comes as Spain continue nationwide celebrations after ending Argentina’s reign as world champions, while attention now shifts from the pitch to the disciplinary process that could have lasting consequences for several members of the Albiceleste squad.
